After Jesus had fed the 5,000, he told the disciples to get
into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side.
Then he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. By
evening, the boat had sailed a great distance from the land.
As the disciples sailed toward the other side ...
the wind began to blow and the sea became rough.
The sea became so
rough that some of
the disciples were
becoming seasick!
The disciples looked out over the sea and saw
an amazing sight! They saw Jesus walking
toward them on the water.

They looked out at the sea and guess what they saw?
They saw Jesus walking toward them on the water!

A Nature Miracle
• Like several others:
– Calming the sea
– Water to wine
– Multiplying loaves and fish
• Tells us something about Jesus:
– His power over nature matches the greatest
prophets of the Old Testament.
– His directness of miracle-working surpasses

theirs.
When they saw him, they were terrified and cried
out in fear, "It's a ghost!"
"Don't be afraid, it is I,“ Jesus said.
"Lord, if it's you," Peter said, "tell me to
come to you on the water."

"Come," Jesus answered.

Unusual re/ Peter

• Disciples sometimes shared in Jesus'
miracles:
– Loaves & fish
– Casting out demons
• This is the most direct one:
– Peter doing miracle in Jesus' presence
– Almost seems like grandstanding, but Jesus
doesn't rebuke Peter for this

So Peter got out of the boat and began
walking on the water toward Jesus.

What Does It Mean?

• Peter is able to accomplish something humanly
impossible thru Jesus' empowering him.
• Jesus does not rebuke Peter's desire to do this.

But when he saw the waves, he was afraid…

What Does It Mean?

• Peter begins to waver when he realizes he is out
of his depth!

and he began to sink!
“Help! Save me,” Peter cried!
Immediately, Jesus reached out and caught him.
"You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

What Does It Mean?

A. Peter needed help – He didn’t need help tomorrow, or an hour from now, he
needed the help right the and there. When Peter withdraws his trust from Jesus
& begins to fear circumstances, he fails.
• 1. When he recognized he was sinking, he cried out: “Lord, save me.”
• 2. The cry had barely come forth from his lips when Jesus immediately
stretched forth His hand, and caught him.
B. Jesus comes to the rescue.
• 1. Sometimes we may have too much pride and do not ask for help; but
Peter was not that way, he recognized he was in a terrible situation and he
knew the only one who could help him, Jesus
• 1. When we are in need, we must cry out for help just like Peter did
• a. Some do not even realize they are sinking in sin
• b. Others see their plight, but do not call on Jesus for help

• 2. We like Peter have help waiting for us.

And when they had climbed back into
the boat, the sea became calm.
We face many storms in our daily life.
If we keep our eyes on Jesus, we can
weather the storm!

Understood as Parable
• Not necessarily that Jesus will do miracles
thru us (He might!), but …
• The Christian life, rightly lived, is like
walking on water.
• If we really trust Jesus in living our lives,
we will come into circumstances and
opportunities that are way over our heads.

Understood as Parable
• If we quit trusting in Jesus and begin to
fear our circumstances, God will let us fail.
• If we cling to Him, He will uphold us.
• The Christian life is a life of constant trust:
– Let us make God our security rather than
security our god…
– … and God will make our enemies flee before
us (even Satan) rather than us flee our
enemies (even the weakest ones).

Lesson
Jesus wants us to get out of the
boat and join him in a grand
adventure that will make our
lives exciting and worthwhile in a
way that we have hardly even
dared to imagine.
