Endotracheal Suctioning
Background:
Endotracheal suctioning is able to create extremely high
flows that are potentially able to eliminate the complete
volume delivered to the lungs by the ventilator

High sub-atmospheric suction pressure can result in:

- Partial or total elimination of gas volume in the lungs
- Alveolar collapse
- Atelektasis
- Hypoaemia
- Hypercapnia

The extent of the effect is directly related to the size of

the suction catheter used.

Choosing the right catheter can be difficult.

What are nurses saying?
Endotracheal suctioning is very physical
Wrong sized suction catheters
Need to use “end-feel” to estimate depth of catheter insertion
Short time-frame for suctioning ventilated patient
