INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION – GPT:AN ARTIFICIAL TOOTH ON A FIXED
DENTAL PROSTHESIS THAT REPLACES A MISSING
NATURAL TOOTH, RESTORES ITS FUNCTIONS,AND
USUALLY FILLS THE SPACE PREVIOUSLY OCCUPIED
BY THE CLINICAL CROWN
DEFINITION
• ACCORDING TO TYLMAN-
pontic is the suspended member
of a fixed partial denture . It
replaces the lost natural tooth ,
restores function and occupies
the space of the missing tooth
IDEAL REQUISITES
Proper design
Hygiene
Easily cleansable
No irritation to gingival tissue
Restore function
Color stable
No abutment overloading

BIOLOGIC CONSIDERATION
Cleanable tissue surface
.access to abutment teeth
No pressure on ridge
MECHANICAL CONSIDERATION
RIGID TO RESIST DEFORMATION
ESTHETIC
STRONG CONNECTORS TO PREVENT
FRACTURE SHAPED TO LOOK LIKE TOOTH IT REPLACES
APPEARS TO GROW OUT OF EDENTULOUS
METAL CERAMIC FRAMEWORK TO RIDGE
RESIST PORCELAIN FRACTURE
SUFFICIENT SPACE FOR PORCELAIN
EDENTULOUS RIDGE .
CLASS I –Loss of facio-lingual ridge width
with normal apico-coronal height
MUCOSAL NO MUCOSAL

• SANITARY OR HYGENIC
• ANATOMIC TYPE

• METAL
• METAL AND PORCELAIN
• METAL AND RESIN
PREFABRICATED PONTICS
• FLAT BACK
• LONGPINFACING
• TRUPONTIC
• REVERSE PIN FACING
• PONTIPS
BIOLOGIC CONSIDERATION
• TISSUE CONTACT
Excessive tissue contact is failure to FPD
The area of contact should be small
Portion of pontic touching the ridge should be as convex as
possible
However if there is contact along gingivo facial angle of
pontic there must be no space between pontic and soft
tissue on the facial side of the ridge
If the tip of the pontic will extend past the mucogingival
junction ulcer formation will be there
The pontic should contact only attached keratinized gingiva
Generally accepted that pontic should exert no pressure on
the ridge
POST INSERTION HYGIENE
HYGIENE
• The mesial distal lingual gingival embrasures of the pontic
sould be wide open to allow the patient easy to access
for cleaning
• Contact between tissue and pontic must allow the
passage of floss from one retainer to another
• Inter proximal brushes floss, pipes etc are used to clean
the prosthesis
• Give patient the time to learn the techniques and
demonstrate the cleaning of underside of pontic
• Even the smoothest pontic surface should be cleaned well
MECHANICAL
CONSIDERATIONS
• CHOICE OF MATERIAL
• FRAMEWORK DESIGN
• TOOTH PREPARATION
ESTHETIC CONSIDERATIONS
ACHEIVING NATURAL APPEARANCE
MODIFIED RIDGE LAP IS
RECOMMENDED
RIDGE TISSUE IS SURGICALLY TREATED
TO ENHANCE THE RESULT
PONTIC
• . DESIGNS
SADDLE
This pontic looks most like tooth ,replacing
all contours of the missing tooth
It forms a large concave contact with the
ridge
Also called as ridge lap pontic
Its an unclean design
Floss cannot traverse the tissue facing
areas
Saddle causes tissue inflammation so it
should not be used
MODIFIED RIDGE LAP
Design gives illusion of the tooth ,but it possess
all or nearly all convex surfaces for the ease of
cleaning
Prevent food impaction
Minimize plaque accumulation
Ridge contact must extend no farther lingually
than the midline even on posterior tooth
Most commonly used design with porcelain
veneer in the appearance zones of both maxilla
and mandible
HYGIENIC
• Hygienic pontic the term used to refer the pontic
which have no contact with the edentulous ridge
• Called as sanitary pontics
• Used in non appearance zones
• Restores occlusal function and stabilizes
opposing teeth
• All convex configuration
• Occlusogingival thickness no less than 3 mm
.
Conical
• Rounded and cleanable
• But the tip is small compared to overall
size of the pontic
• Well suited on a thin mandibular ridge
• However when used with broad flat ridge
.the resulting large triagles seem to
accumulate debris
• Thus its use is limited to thin ridges
Ovate
• Round –end design of pontic currently in
use
• Where esthetics is a primary concern
• Tissue contacting surface is bluntly
rounded
• Easily flossed
• Works well with a broad flat ridge
CONCLUSION
• GIVING IMPORTANCE TO LONG TERM
SUCCESS
• PONTICS ARE DESIGNS THAT ALLOW EASY
PLAQUE CONTROL
• THIS MEANS MINIMIZING TISSUE CONTACT
BY MAXIMIZING THE CONVEXICITY OF
GINGIVAL SURFACE OF PONTIC
• SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS GIVEN TO
