WELCOME TO

WESTBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL


 

Open Evening
Tuesday 2nd October 2013
6.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m.
 
During your visit with us this evening, please make sure you visit
all the subject areas in school so you can see what is on offer and
have your questions answered.
  
There is a treasure trail for the children – make sure you pick one
up!!

 The Acting Headteacher and Senior Leadership team will be


available throughout the evening in the Reception Area and the
Dining Hall.
Enterprise and Work Related Education
 
Come to D1 and find out about how big businesses brand and
market products by doing some ‘blind testing’ of well known
products. Business staff will be on hand to talk about the
Business and Enterprise curriculum along with other projects we
are involved in.

Performing Arts

Come to PA4 o see a showcase of acts including dancers,


vocalists and actors. These will take place at 6.30pm and
7.30pm.
Come to PA5 for Mask Making and Stage Makeup workshops at
7pm.

English
 
Come to the new English block for Sherbert Lemon Poetry with
Mrs McNulty and Mrs Tomlinson (E7), join Mrs Lawther and Ms
Kauser for a ‘Quick Quiz’ (E8), create Venetian masks with Mrs
McIntosh and Mr Farar (E9) and take part in interactive
activities with Mr Smith and Mr Fieldhouse.

Creative Minds

Come to L8 to experience a curriculum called Creative Minds.


The aim of this curriculum is to provide our young people with
the real world skills or competencies they need to thrive. It is a
broad framework through which we deliver Music, ICT, Drama
and the Humanities in a creative and flexible way so that our
young people leave school able to succeed.
 
In terms of assessment, students continue to be assessed in line
with National Curriculum levels for individual subjects but are
also assessed on their attributes for learning. These attributes
for learning are: Resourceful, Reliable, Reasoning, Resilient and
Responsible (The 5R’s).
 
Creative Minds is taught by a dedicated team of teachers from
Humanities, ICT and the Arts. It sees two form classes joining
together and studying exciting topics each half term.
Learning Support/SEN/EMA

Come to inclusion to talk to the Additional Needs staff about:


the Turnaround Centre, programs to develop reading and spelling
skills, Success Maker, community liaison, encouraging the
achievements and progress of ethnic minority pupils and
information on parent activites including ESOL/IT workshops.

Art Design and Technology

Come to D3, 6 and 11 to experience ADT at Westborough.


Art –Miss Baker will be showcasing recycled fashion. Come in and
make a recycled corsage.
Mrs Walker will be running an open art studio as well.
 
Design Technology – Come to D11 to see our exciting technology
showcase!
 
Food – Mrs Clayton will be baking with her students so come in
for a tasty treat! You will also have the opportunity to decorate
your own biscuit.
 
Textiles – Mrs Owen, Mrs Crompton and Mrs Fisher will be
showcasing the textiles work done in the department. Come and
see the exciting things you could make.
 
Resistant Materials – Miss Pepper, Mr Pryce and Mr Bartle will
be showcasing the excellent work done in Resistant Materials.
Come and see how creative students could be in this subject!

Languages
 
Come to D2 and D4 for Language games, role play, music and ICT
supporting language learning in French, Spanish and Urdu. Also
come to learn the basics of Flamenco!

Maths

Come and join us in the Maths department for puzzles in A9 and


games in A5. Follow the Maths trail around the school: solve the
clues and win a prize!
Humanities (History and Geography)

Come to A6 and 7 where there will be a display of children’s


work, exhibits of trip photos, artifacts and pupil resources for
you to see.

ICT

Come to ICT2 where a number of students will be working on


digital media type tasks including: digital photography/graphics,
sound editing, programming using Scratch and creating
animations using Flash. These skills are similar to those used in
our exam qualification courses.

LRC
 
Come and have a look around our Learning Resource Centre. We
will be happy to show you the books and computers that the
students use.
 
Take part in a Harry Potter Quiz, you might win a prize!

Science

Come to C2, 3 and 5 for hair raising experiments! Flashes and


bangs, acids and alkalis – a whole world of exciting science
awaits. Don’t miss the spectacular SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS!
Witness the screaming jelly babies, firework funnel, methane
bubbles and the hair raising shock machine!

Extended schools – breakfast club


 
Come and visit us in the canteen this evening and have a go at
some of the activities students can do at breakfast club.
As part of this programme we are open from 7.30am in the
morning. Students are able to get breakfast, do homework,
have a chat or play games either on the Wii or more traditional
board games.  

PE

Come to the Sports Hall where a variety of sporting activities


are being demonstrated including, table tennis, badminton,
netball and basketball.
