Bio-drainage

 Biodrainage may be defined as “pumping of

excess soil water using bio-energy through
deep-rooted vegetation with high rate of
transpiration.”
The biodrainage system consists of fast growing
tree species, which absorb water from the
capillary fringe located above the ground
water table.
 The absorbed water is translocated to
different parts of plants and finally more than
98% of the absorbed water is transpired into the
atmosphere mainly through the stomata.
This combined process of absorption,
translocation and transpiration of excess ground
water into the atmosphere by the deep rooted
vegetation conceptualizes bio-drainage.
Bio-drainage plants

 Eucalyptus
 Alfalfa
 Willow
 Poplar
Eucalyptus
 Eucalyptus uses 3400 mm of water 3 year period of time.
Alfalfa

 Alfalfa consumes 4-20 thousand m3/ha

 It is a grass with deep root system 3-4m.
 Plantation along irrigation canals capture seepage and ground water by their
roots
Willow and poplar

 Willowand Poplar consume 20-100 m3 of water

per tree during the growth season.
 They are usually used for the plantations along
inter farm and on farm canals.

Poplar tree
Merits of biodrainage

Relatively less costly to raise biodrainage

plantations
No maintenance cost from 3rd year onward
No operational cost, as the plants use their bio-
energy in draining out the excess ground water
into atmosphere.
Increase in worth with age instead of
depreciation
Merits of biodrainage

No environmental problem, as the plants

drain out filtered fresh water into the
atmosphere
In- situ solution of the problem of water
logging and salinity
Preventive as well as curative system for
waterlogging and salinity
Demerits of biodrainage

 Some area required for growing the plants that

cannot be available for crop cultivation.
 The plant can lower down the ground water table
which in turns the water is not reachable to the
main crop plant.
 Eucalyptus is known for lower down of the water
table for that area.
 Salinity control very limited
