Let Us Plant Trees
Trees are our friends. They give us
shade. They protect us from the rain
and the sun. Many trees give us fruits
to eat. Some of them are mango,
santol, and durian. Others are caimito,
mabolo, duhat, and chico. These fruits
taste good. They make us healthy and
strong, too.
Some trees have pretty flowers.
They come in many colors-red, white,
yellow, and violet. Trees give us wood.
Wood can be made into chairs,
tables, desks, and cabinets. Wood is
all around us. We find it at home, in
school, in the playground, and in the
church. Let us plant trees. Wood

The Deer and the Turtle
One day, a deer saw a turtle walking.
The deer said, “How slowly you walk!
Do you see that big coconut tree
there? It will take you a day to get
there. It will take me only twenty
minutes.”
The turtle answered slowly, “I am
slow. But I will run a race to that
tree with you.” the deer laughed. “Be
here tomorrow morning,” the turtle
said. The next morning, the deer and
the turtle met. The race started.
The deer ran for a few minutes. He
looked back at the turtle.
The turtle was only a few meters
from the starting line.
The deer saw a big mango tree.
He said, “I think I’ll rest for a
while. That old turtle cannot run
fast.” He lay down in the shade
of the tree. Soon, he was fast
asleep.
The turtle was walking very slowly.
He felt hot, but he did not stop. His
feet hurt but he walked on.
It was afternoon when the deer
woke up. “Oh, I fell asleep,” he
said, rubbing his eyes. He looked
around. He could not see the turtle.
He ran as fast as he could. At last,
he got to the coconut tree.” I won!”
he shouted. The turtle came from
behind the tree. “You lost, my
friend,” he said. “I was here before
you.”
