Gait patterns with assistive devices

( Crutch – Walker )
Assistive devices
These are the devices which may be a means of moving 
weight from upper limb to the ground or which may be
: used to assist balance

Crutch
Is a mobility aid that moving weight from legs to top - 
body

: Types of crutches - 
axillary : usually when non-weight bearing gait is – 1 
.required , The axillary above is rested against the chest

Elbow crutches : the most functional type of crutches, – 2 

. suitable for both non and partial weight bearing gaits
Walker
Have very wide foundation - 

Very stabilized - 

Common used with elderly - 

Gait patterns

Gait is a person’s pattern of walking and it is involves - 

balance and coordination of muscle

: Gait patterns with assistive devices include 

Swing to gait
.In this gait both crutches are transported forward together 

The trunk & lower extremities tendency forwards, • 

weight is move to the upper limbs & walking aids & both
lower limbs are lifted & sway forwards to the level of
crutches
Swing to gait
Swing- through gait
Both crutches are occupied forward, then both lower -  
limb are pushed up & sway to the crutches, so that the
crutches are left behind of the point where the feet on the
.floor

This gait is most common used by those who have no   

lower limb control such as Spinal cord injury patients

Unsuitable for those with painful of lower limbs  - 

Swing –through gait
Three point gate
It required of two walking aids, crutches follow by the 
affected leg then unaffected leg

If a minimal weight-bearing gait is required, e.g toe - 

touching only, then a delayed three point gait must be
utilized where the walking aid makes contact with the
.ground before the affected leg touches the floor
 
Partial weight bearing is often prescribed in orthopaedic - 
conditions, with a gradual progression on weight bearing
over time
Three point gate
Four point gate
In this gait two walking devices are used, one for each - 
.leg
The right walking device is set forward, followed by the - 
left leg, then the left walking device and the right leg

A Four-point gait is perfect for balance & as a step to -  

relearning a normal reciprocal gait pattern
