What can weAgenda
learn from the
activity that has something to do
with Action Research?

8
What is an Action Research?
• Action Research is probably the purest form of applied
research.
• Action Research involves the application of the scientific
method to everyday problems in the classroom.
How do you DEFINE Action Research?
• Action research brings together action and reflection, as
well as theory and practice, in participation with others,
in the pursuit of practical solutions to issues of pressing
concern (Bradbury, 2015, p. 1)
How do you DEFINE Action Research?
• Action research in education is research undertaken by
practitioners in order that they may improve their
practices.
Why conduct an Action Research?
1. Action research powers professional growth
2. Action research makes change manageable
3. Action research promotes collaboration
4. Action research loves being shared
5. Action research can power systems change
6. Action research enable us to say with greater certainty,
beyond anecdotal evidence, that our efforts are having an
effect (hopefully positive!).
What are the CHALLENGES in conducting Action Research?
Challenges What can be done?
Identifying the research question • Do Observation and Reflection
• Use the Basic Questions and Root cause analysis
NO time to create research • Collaborate with colleagues within the school,
and outside the school
Technical difficulties like writing process, and • Collaborate
procedure. • Citation and filing of references use Mendeley
Identification of appropriate statistical treatment or • Upskilling
qualitative treatment.
Funding • Do not pursue too complicated studies. You can
start with your classroom practice.
Shortage in getting related literature • There are a lot of available resources in the
internet
• Google Scholar
• Sci-hub.tf
• b-ok.cc
• archive.org

First Step: Research Question?
• How does the use of computers affect the student writing process in our
fourth-grade classrooms?
• What strategies can I use to build productive learning relationships in
mathematics with the students in my classroom?
• What happens to the reading comprehension of the students when we
systematically differentiate instruction?
How to find your Research Question?
PASSIONS
• Helping an individual child
• Improving and enriching the curriculum
• Developing content knowledge
• Improving or experimenting with teaching strategies and techniques
• Exploring the relationship between your belief and classroom practice
• Exploring the intersection of your personal and professional identities
• Advocating Social Justice
• Understanding the teaching and learning context

Observation/Reflection
• What are the problems I have observed, or I have been
observing?
• What are the desired results?
Observation/Reflection
• What are the problems I have observed, or I have been
observing?
• Students do not achieve the minimum learning competencies in fundamental
operations of integers
• What are the desired results?
• Students should be able to achieve the minimum learning competencies in
fundamental operations of integers
Observation/Reflection

Observation/Reflection
• What are the problems I have observed, or I have been
observing?
• Students do not achieve the minimum learning competencies in fundamental
operations of integers
• What are the desired results?
• Students should be able to achieve the minimum learning competencies in
fundamental operations of integers
• WHY?
• Why did students fail to achieve the minimum learning
competencies in fundamental operations of integers?
Root Cause Analysis

• Identify factors that contribute to the problem

• Uses facts to support decisions
• Leads to the interventions designed to prevent future
harm
• Inquiry process that requires a team and time

9/3/20XX Presentation Title 25

Root Cause Analysis is NOT

• A solo process
• Identifying symptoms
• Guesswork
• Opinion
• Beliefs

Root Cause Analysis Tools
• Fishbone diagram

28
Root Cause Analysis Tools
• Causal Mapping

29
Process of Root Cause Analysis

• Define the challenge/ Problem

• Brainstorming
• Once brainstorming is complete do the following:

30
Process of Root Cause Analysis

• Once brainstorming is complete do the following:

• Label factors that are in control of the student and in control
of the adult
• Cross-out student factors that are in control of the student,
unless there is an action from the adult to change it
• Label In control and Out of control
• Determine the control whether it is at the region, district,
school or classroom level

Research Question

• What happens to my student’s mastery of the minimum learning

competency in fundamental operations of integers when
remediation instructions will be conducted?
Process of Finding the Research Question?

• Observation and Reflection

• Root Cause Analysis ‘
• Formulate your Research Question
• Begin with What, How, Why,
• Use First Person such as “I”, “My”, “We”.
Second: Working Title of an Action Research
• Temporary
• Helps you reorient yourself back to the main purpose of
the study

• Words or phrase that indicate your purpose:

• Increase the academic performance, work engagement, self-efficacy
• Intensify interest, recycling activity
• Reduce absenteeism, incidence of bullying
Title of Action Research
Purpose + Respondents or Population + [Locale] + Intervention
E.g.
Purpose – Increase the Academic Performance
Intervention – Peer tutoring
Respondents – Grade 6 pupils taking Mathematics

Increase the Academic Performance of Grade 6 pupils taking

Mathematics using Peer Tutoring
Research Question
• What happens to my student’s mastery of the minimum learning competency in
fundamental operations of integers when our classroom environment would be more
lenient when it comes to student mistakes?
Purpose + Respondents or Population + [Locale] + Intervention
E.g.
Purpose – Improve mastery of the minimum learning competency in
fundamental operations of integers
Intervention – [Strategy to make the environment more lenient]
Respondents – [Students] in Mathematics

Working Title
• Improving mastery of the minimum learning competency in
fundamental operations of integers of students in mathematics by
a more lenient environment

Then altogether we are going to
formulate a Research Question.
WHAT’S NEXT?
BRIEF REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

• Do you have relevant readings about your research problem?

• What do the authors say about your research problem?
• Why does the problem happen according to the authors?
• Based on your readings, what are the different ways of solving the
problem you have identified in this research?
• Have you read researches that have bearing to your action research?
Whose research studies, are they? When were these researches
conducted?
Summary
• Action Research is probably the purest form of applied research that involves
the application of the scientific method to everyday problems in the
classroom.
• Action Research is beneficial to teachers.
• Conducting action research is not very easy, hence challenges are present. But,
with appropriate help, they can be overcome.
• Action Research starts with the formulation of the Research Question, and the
Working title. This is followed by the Review of Related Literature
