Consequences in using Social Media
In this day and age, social media constantly surrounds us. People are always
on their phones or laptops updating statuses, posting pictures, liking things,
and messaging back and forth with friends. Although social media is
extremely beneficial in several ways (i.e., self expression, communicating
with long-distance friends, self-identity, emotional support, and so on), it
does have a negative impact on mental health.
How can Social Media help students
study?
o Create a community: It's common for many students to be challenged by
the same learning concept or course assignment. Social media can help
centralize the collective knowledge of an entire class to make studying
and communicating more efficient for everyone.
o Continue the conversation: Starting a collaborative study network to tap
into the group mind can save everyone time and effort.
o Organize learning resources: Social media tools can help keep course
information organized and accessible.
o Supplement course materials: Social media can help identify additional
content to reinforce or extend core instruction.
Tips on how to be safe while using Social
Media
• Read the site’s privacy policy and use its privacy and security settings to
control who can see your personal information.
• Don’t post personal details, such as your phone number or home address.
Avoid posting photos of your home that make it easy to identify where
you live.
• Don’t accept every friend or follower request you get – only connect with
people you know in real life or whose identity you know is genuine.
• Avoid clicking on links in messages, tweets, posts, and online advertising.
These may be links to viruses or other forms of malicious content.
