So who’s going to win the race?!?

Focus of today’s lesson.
Calculate the speed of an object (5)

Describe the journey of objects by interpreting

distance-time graphs and determine the gradient (6)

Describe the journey of objects by interpreting speed-

time graphs and determine the gradient (7)
How is speed calculated?
distance travelled
speed =
time taken
 Distance travelled is measured in metres (m).

 Time taken is measured in seconds (s).

 Speed is measured in metres per second (m/s).

The standard unit for speed in physics is m/s, but other units such as
kilometres per hour (km/h) are more convenient when measuring
the speed of vehicles. Why is this?
Using a formula triangle
A formula triangle helps you to rearrange a formula. The formula triangle for
speed (s), distance (d) and time (t) is shown below.

Cover the quantity that you are trying to work out, which gives the
rearranged formula needed for the calculation.
So to find speed (s), cover up s… …which gives the
formula…

  s =
d
t

Distance time graphs – 5 min
You can discuss the answers with your partner, but
you must write the answers on your sheet

Once you have finished you are to self assess you

work and make a note of what you did well and
how could you have done better (WWW and EBI)
Extension – write
down your ideas for
the question at the
bottom of the
worksheet
Did your distance-time graphs look like
this…?
Distance/Time Description
D A horizontal line at any distance
Stationary shows that the object is not
covering any distance as time
t increases.
B
A The steepness of the line
Constant D demonstrates how fast an
movement C object is moving.

What does the gradient of a distance-time
graph tell you?
What is the gradient

How do we find the
gradient?

What is a vector quantity?
A vector quantity is one that has magnitude

(size) and direction

A scalar quantity is one that has magnitude

(size) only

Do you need to get these definitions down

or can you remember them?
Vector quantities
What distance would a
racing car travel
around a lap of
Silverstone?
5,900 km
What would be the
displacement of the
racing car at the start-
finish line after one
lap?
0m Is force a vector quantity?
Yes
How can you tell from the
diagram?
Because it has an arrow
to show the direction it
acts in
Who did win the race?
The truth is revealed....
What’s the mistake?
You have a sheet in front of you with a total of 16
mistakes. You need to find a minimum of 5 mistakes!

Your job is to find them.

Find 13 – AWESOME
Find 9 – Well done
Find 5 – I need to set you more homework!

You have 5 minutes to find the mistakes.
