What is READING STRATEGIES?
It is the strategies that we used that makes our
reading more comprehensive and meaningful.

SKIMMING
What is Skimming?
Skimming is used to quickly gather the
most important information or ‘gist’.

How to get the gist ?


Purpose of SKIMMING :
 To get only the main idea
 To know the general overview

Example of Skimming :
 The Newspaper
 Magazines
 Business and Travel Brochures
How to skim?
1. Read the title if there is one.
2. Review the subheadings in each chapter
3. Quicky read the first paragrph in that section
4. Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
5. Check out anything in your text that is in bold or
italics
6. Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
7. Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.
8. Read the summary or last paragraph if there is one.
SCANNING

What is SCANNING ?
Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you
want to find specific information quickly. Use scanning
on schedules, meeting plans, etc in order to find the
spesific detail your require.
Purpose of scanning :
 To locate a spesific fact or piece of information
 Notice only the clue word
Examples of Scanning:
 A Traine/ a plane schedules
A meeting plans
A google search list on the
internet.
A bus / airplane schedule
A conference guide
 A graph
TIPS IN DOING SCANNING:

Keep in mind at all times what it is you will searching for


Anticipate in what form the information is likely appear
(numbers, proper nouns, etc.)
Analyze the organization of the content before starting to scan
When you find the sentence that has the information you seek,
read the whole sentence
 
EXTENSIVE READING

Extensive reading is used to obtain a


general understanding of a subject and
includes reading longer texts for pleasure,
as well as bussiness book.
The purpose of this type of reading
is to get acquainted with new
information.
Extensive reading must be done
for longer blocks of time when
compared to intensive reading.
Example :
 Novels
 Magazines
 Comic books
MATERIALS
• Texts for extensive reading
must be interesting.
• Texts for extensive reading
must be level-appropriate.
• Texts for extensive reading
must be of moderate
length.
If the text you wish to extensively
read is at the appropriate level,
you'll find that most unknown
words can be deciphered by
looking at their surrounding
context, making overt use of
translations or dictionaries
unnecessary.

When extensively reading, it is


best to stay relaxed.
INTENSIVE READING

It is reading where testing, evaluating


and increasing knowledge,
In intensive reading, there is an
emphais on deconstructing
sentences to understand grammar
and syntax rules as well as to
extricate the details of topic.
To read intensively is to completely
deconstruct a text, with the goal of
absorbing as much meaning from it
as possible.
Intensive reading requires
great mental effort and
focus.
Specifically, if you wish to read
a text intensively, you must
take care to read texts that
are interesting and short, to
read only for brief periods of
time,
MATERIALS :
• Texts for intensive reading must be interesting
• Texts for intensive reading must be short

IDEAL LEARNING MATERIALS FOR INTENSIVE READING :


 News articles
 Wikipedia articles
 Short stories
 Blog posts
 You must intensively read
for brief periods of time
specifically to avoid the mental
exhaustion that is described
above.
 Limit intensive reading
sessions to 30-35 minutes
maximum.
 You must intensively read only
when you have the most
mental energy,
