Introduction
• Blu-Ray is the name of next generation of optical disk.
• The name is the combination of “blue” for the color of
laser that is used and ray is optical ray.
• In 1997,a new technology that brought the digital sound
and video it was the DVD later the Blu-Ray Discs are
introduced.
• Blu-Ray is the next generation of digital video discs.
• It has high storage capacity, the discs can record, store and
play back high definition video and audio as well as data.
• Blu-Ray has five times more bandwidth than the DVD,and
have more than five times more storage also.
• The standard DVD can hold 4.7GB of information and
Blu-Ray has five times more that is 25GB.
Advantages
A Single Layer Blu-Ray disc, which is roughly the same size
as a DVD,can hold up to 27GB of data that’s more than 2 hours
of high definition video.
A Double Layer Blu-Ray disc can store up to 50GB,enough to
hold about 4.5 hours of high definition video or more than 20
hours of standard video.
Record High-Definition Television without any quality loss.
Instantly skip to any spot on the disk.
Record one program while watching another on the disc.
Create play lists, edit or reorder the programs recorded on the
disc.
Automatically search for an empty space on the disc to avoid
recording over a program, access the web to download subtitles.
Features
Blu-Ray will be able to connect to the internet and
instantly download subtitles.
DVD’s use a red laser to read and write data, but the Blu-
Ray discs uses the blue laser.
A blue laser has a shorter wavelength of 405 nanometers
than a red laser of 650 nanometers.
Each Blu-Ray disc is about the same thickness as DVD
that is 1.2 millimeters.
The DVD surface is not flat,so it has disc tilt problem to
overcome this the user can make use of Blu-Ray discs.
So,Blu-Ray discs are better than the DVD’s and the design
saves the manufacturing costs.
Blu-Ray has higher data transfer rate of 36Mbps and the
DVD’s which transfer at 10Mbps.
Blu-Ray vs other new formats
The other format is the HD-DVD also called advanced optical
disc.
The advantage of HD-DVD is that it uses same basic format of
DVD’s but it can save the costs.
The disadvantage is that it can’t match the storage capacity
of Blu-Ray.
A single-Layer HD-DVD can hold 15GB and in double it can
store up to
30GB that is similar to that of Blu-Ray capacity.
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are two major competitors in market.
But the Blu-Ray are used up to 50GB storage capacity.
Blu-Ray can compete with a few other other formats in DVD
market place.
