Introduction
• Blu-Ray is the name of next generation of optical disk.
• The name is the combination of “blue” for the color of
laser that is used and ray is optical ray.
• In 1997,a new technology that brought the digital sound
and video it was the DVD later the Blu-Ray Discs are
introduced.
• Blu-Ray is the next generation of digital video discs.
• It has high storage capacity, the discs can record, store and
play back high definition video and audio as well as data.
• Blu-Ray has five times more bandwidth than the DVD,and
have more than five times more storage also.
• The standard DVD can hold 4.7GB of information and
Blu-Ray has five times more that is 25GB.
Advantages
A Single Layer Blu-Ray disc, which is roughly the same size
as a DVD,can hold up to 27GB of data that’s more than 2 hours
of high definition video.
A Double Layer Blu-Ray disc can store up to 50GB,enough to
hold about 4.5 hours of high definition video or more than 20
hours of standard video.
Record High-Definition Television without any quality loss.
Instantly skip to any spot on the disk.
Record one program while watching another on the disc.
Create play lists, edit or reorder the programs recorded on the
disc.
Automatically search for an empty space on the disc to avoid
recording over a program, access the web to download subtitles.
Features
 Blu-Ray will be able to connect to the internet and
instantly download subtitles.
 DVD’s use a red laser to read and write data, but the Blu-
Ray discs uses the blue laser.
 A blue laser has a shorter wavelength of 405 nanometers
than a red laser of 650 nanometers.
 Each Blu-Ray disc is about the same thickness as DVD
that is 1.2 millimeters.
 The DVD surface is not flat,so it has disc tilt problem to
overcome this the user can make use of Blu-Ray discs.
 So,Blu-Ray discs are better than the DVD’s and the design
saves the manufacturing costs.
 Blu-Ray has higher data transfer rate of 36Mbps and the
DVD’s which transfer at 10Mbps.
Blu-Ray vs other new formats
 The other format is the HD-DVD also called advanced optical
disc.
 The advantage of HD-DVD is that it uses same basic format of
DVD’s but it can save the costs.
 The disadvantage is that it can’t match the storage capacity
 of Blu-Ray.
 A single-Layer HD-DVD can hold 15GB and in double it can
store up to
 30GB that is similar to that of Blu-Ray capacity.
 Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are two major competitors in market.
 But the Blu-Ray are used up to 50GB storage capacity.
 Blu-Ray can compete with a few other other formats in DVD
market place.

Conclusion
• Blu-Ray is going to play a dominant role in electronic

• So in present days the films are released by using the Blu-
Ray discs.
Limitations

• Blu-Ray players will not down-convert the analog output

signal unlessthe video contains something called ICT.
• The Image Constraint Token is not a part of Blu-Ray disc
spec, butof aacs copy-protection system also adopted by
HD-DVD.
• The first generation of products will likely be quite
expensive due to low production volumes.
• This is not a problem in wide range of Blu-Ray related
products planned over all production costs.
