What you’ll learn:

Apply set operation to solve a
variety of word problems.
Solve word problems involving sets
with the use of Venn Diagram
Trip To Palawan
Explore:
A group of 50 students went in a
tour in Palawan province. Out of 50
students, 24 joined the trip to Coron,
18 went to Tubbataha Reef, 20
visited El Nido, 12 made trip to
Coron and Tubbataha Reef, 15 saw
Tubbataha Reef and El Nido, 11
made a trip to Coron and El Nido
and 10 saw the three tourist spots.

In solving problem,
application of the knowledge in sets
and the use of Venn diagram and sets
operations are necessary.
Steps in Solving Word Problems

1. Analyze the problem.

2. Identify the unknowns.
3.Represent or use Venn diagram if
possible.
4. Label your answers properly.
Problem :
There are 40 students in a class ,
12 of these students like
Mathematics and 25 of them like
Science. If 5 of the students in the
class like neither Mathematics nor
Science, how many students like
both Math and Science?
Given:
1. Lists all the given, then draw the Venn Diagram

12 students - Mathematics
25 students - Science
5 students - Neither Mathematics nor
Science

TOTAL : 40 students
2. Venn Diagram:

Given:
1. Lists all the given, then draw the Venn Diagram

2. Venn Diagram:
U

5
n(M-S) + n(M ∩S) + n(S-M) = 35
-n(M-S) -+ n(M ∩S) = -12
n(S-M) = 23
(Science only)

10 2 23
25 – Science
12 – Math

Thus, 2 students like Both Math and Science.
