ME8693 HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

REGULATION-2017

Mr.P.KANNAN
• Calculate the rate of heat loss for a red brick wall of length 5m,height 4m and thickness 0.25m.The
temperature of the inner surface is 110°C and that of the outer surface is 40°C. The thermal
conductivity of redbrick K=0.70W/mK. Calculate also the temperature at an interior point of the wall,
20cm distant from the inner wall.
Given

l=5m,h=4m, L=0.25m,x=20cm

T1= 110°C, T2= 40°C,k=0.70w/mK

Solution
Q=kA/L [T1-T2]
Q= 0.70 [5*4] [110-40]/ 0.25
Q=3.92kW

the temperature at x=0.20m

T=(T2-T1) x/L+T1

T=(40-110)0.20/0.25+110
T=54°C
• A stainless steel plate 2cm thick is maintained at a temperature of 550°C at one
face and 50°C on the other. The thermal conductivity of stainless steel at 300°C
is 19.1W/mK. Compute the heat transferred through the material per unit area.

• Q=kA/L [T1-T2]

• Q/A=q=k/L(T1-T2)=(19.1)(550-50)/ 0.02

• = 477.5kW/m2

T b)

Q= (Ta-T1)/Ra = T1-T2 / R1 = T2-T3 / R2 = T3-T4 / R3 = T4-Tb / Rb

Where
Ra = 1/Aha, R1 = L1/Ak1, R2 = L2/Ak2, R3 = L3/Ak3, Rb = 1/Ahb

ΔT = Ta-Tb = (Ta-T1 )+(T1-T2)+(T2-T3)+(T3-T4)+(T4-Tb)

Q= ΔT/ΣR
Q= Ta-Tb / [1/haA+L1/Ak1+L2/Ak2+L3/Ak3+1/hbA ]

= Ta-Tb /ΣR

ΣR = 1/haA+L1/Ak1+L2/Ak2+L3/Ak3+1/hbA

ΣR =1/A[1/ha+L1/k1+L2/k2+L3/k3+1/hb]

Ta=T1, Tb=T4

R=1/UA, Q= Ta-Tb / 1/UA = Q=UAC(Ta- Tb)

U is the overall heat transfer coefficient.
A brick wall 25 cm thick faced with concrete of 5cm thickness. The thermal
conductance of the brick is 0.69W/mK while that of the concrete is 0.93W/mK. The
temperature of the exposed brick is 30°C and that of concrete is 5°C. Find the heat loss
per hour through a wall of 10m*5m. Also determine the intermediate temperature.
Given
L1= 0.25m
L2= 0.05m
k1= 0.69W/mK
k2= 0.93W/mK
T1 = 30°C = 303K
T3 = 5°C = 278K
A= 10*5= 50 m2
To Find
Q=?, T2=?
Q= ΔT/ΣR
We know that from HMT Data book
ΣR =1/A[1/ha+L1/k1+L2/k2+L3/k3+1/hb]
ΣR= 1 /(10*5)[0+0.25/0.69+0.05/0.93+0+0]
ΣR= 1/(50)[0.362+0.053]= 8.3*10-3
Q= ΔT/ΣR = T1-T3/ ΣR = 303-278/ 8.3*10-3
Q= 3006.5W = 3006.5 J/s = 3006.5/[1/3600] = 10.82MJ/hr.
Interface Temperature
T2=? Q= ΔT/ΣR = T1-T2/ [L1/k1A]

3006.5 = 303-T2 / [0.25/0.69*50]

T = 281 K or 8.26°C
