Today’s Agenda
1. Description of Graphene
Supercapacitors and Lithium - ion
batteries.

2. Problems with lithium-ion batteries

3. Comparison of the mechanisms of

both

4. Advantages, performance and

limitations of graphene
supercapacitors.

5. Conclusion
Graphene Supercapacitors

1. Supercapacitors charge and

discharge much faster than
batteries
2. Supercapacitors do not suffer
the same wear and tear
3. Supercapacitors survive
thousands more charge and
discharge cycles
Lithium Ion Batteries
1. Lithium ions move from the
negative electrode through an
electrolyte to the positive
electrode during discharge and
charging cycles

2. Each lithium-ion battery will

have an average of 600 charge
cycles
Problem with Lithium Ion Batteries

1. Expensive Manufacturing
2. Short Life-span
3. Transportation
Material Mechanism comparison

Graphene:
1. Carbon structure allows free movement of electrons or energy

Lithium ion batteries:

2. requires electrochemical reactions to allow electrons discharge at constant rates

Advantages of Graphene Supercapacitors

Advantages of Graphene supercapacitors:

1. Electrons can be discharged almost instantly with minimal resistance.

2. higher discharge efficiency and lower operating temperature

3. greater application to the EV Industry

4. great recyclability

Performance of Graphene Supercapacitors

Figure: Illustrates performance [11]

Cost of Graphene

● Prices decreasing due to advancements in

manufacturing.
● Increase in demand has also resulted in price
decreasing.
● Lack of use of rare earth elements prevents
graphene price fluctuations.
Limitations

● As currently graphene is a newly developed material, synthesizing it still

costs more than lithium ion batteries.

● Supercapacitors have a higher self discharge rate and can lose about 50-
100% in 30 to 40 days of total energy per day compared to batteries [9].
Conclusion

Future of plans of graphene supercapacitors

➢ Supercapacitors are currently used in the automotive industry as a backup for

braking systems.

➢ They are mainly used as a power backup systems at power failures at numerous
occasions.
Overcoming Limitations

❖ Currently the only limitation is the price of manufacturing graphene supercapacitors

compared to lithium ion batteries.

➢ The solution to this is just to invest more time into new technologies and find more better ways
to reduce cost.

➢ More tech companies have to lean towards this technology in order to make it recognizable by
the others.
