Concept

• In today's world we see that mental distress, mental stress, is increasing a lot.
So for this type of

• stress you have to do different treatments.


• A large number of people go to a psychiatrist for advice
• questions about such stress, ask about your problem, talk to you to find out your
problem.
• Such questions asked by the doctors or councilors are called intake interviews

• An intake interview is your first appointment with a therapist. During this initial
appointment, he or she will ask various questions in order to make, or come
closer to making a diagnosis and to create a personalized treatment plan for you.
• The questions your therapist asks depend on a variety of factors. –

• He or she may ask you the questions directly and/or give you a diagnostic test on
paper or online.

• Intake interviews are the most common type of interview in clinical psychology.
• They occur when a client first comes to seek help from a clinician.
Causes –

• Relationship issues,
• Anxiety to depression,
• Phobias to addictions,
• Loss of identity to gender identity issues,
• PTSD to Bipolar Disorder
• Patient OR Disturb Person Thinks That I need help
• Finally they need help for improve there condition and then they call
therapist. Later that Therapist calls for intake interview.

• In first meet with therapist The clinician may explain


• to the client what to expect during the interview, including the time
duration.
• Type of questions –

 Include all years up to the present. Please do not include details. List immediate
family members (childhood and current) and ages of siblings.

 Birth experience: (i.e. mother anesthetized? cord around the neck? induced? c-
section? other?)

 LIST the following types of events. Please include ages, as best you recall.
 Surgeries and/or injuries of any sort? (i.e. car accidents? back injuries? stitches
and where?,tonsillectomy? bicycle spills? etc.?)
 

 Critical incident-type events? (This can include physical abuse, sexual abuse,
witnessing of a horrifying event that occurred to others, etc.)

 Anything else? (i.e. Dental procedures or traumatic experiences with dentists?


Anything not specifically asked?)

 Usually, the clinician diagnoses the patient using criteria from the
first two DSM axes. Some intake interviews include a mental status
examination

 During the intake interview, the clinician may determine a treatment
plan. In some cases, particular clinician may feel that he or she lacks
the expertise to best help the client. It is during the intake interview
that the clinician should refer the client to another source.

• During the intake interview, both parties form opinions about one
another that can be either positive or negative

• A client’s perception of a clinician during an intake interview can


either hinder or encourage them to get further treatment

• This decision whether or not to continue treatment is usually made


after the intake interview takes place.
 Approximately fifty percent of psychotherapy patients drop out of
treatment and most of these patients do so after they have an intake
interview.
• Therefore, it is important that during intake interviews that the
clinician expresses to his or her clients that they have a correct
understanding of the client

• Most clinicians conduct their own intake interviews. However, bigger


organizations with a larger staff pools may have social workers or
other employees who conduct these interviews
 The way that the clinician conducts the intake interview sets the tone
for the continued course of treatment.
 
• Communication style is important during these interviews.

• It is important that the client build rapport during the interview.

• It is often beneficial to both the client and the patient to have a


balance in which the clinician asks questions and the patient also
volunteers certain information

 Identification data of client means there name, age, qualification, profession,


problem.
 These things are most important in intake interview .
 Because of this information counselor does there work easily.

 With whose reference or advise client come for treatment.

 What is the reason behind someone refers the doctor.


History of the problem

 Some History or past of client’s problem which is helps to understand the


problem

SPECIAL FEATURES OF INTAKE
INTERVIEW

 Intake is the meeting with client to understand and be sensitive towards the feeling of client.
Because of this client speak openly about problem.

 Awareness of agency’s functions and services
• 
 The intake interview is a guided interview to ask only relevant questions like history of problem .
 Intake worker should be balance between fact finding and recognition
of feeling.
 

 Intake interviewer to focus on current problem and also motivation of


client to seek help.

 The intake worker should initiate a working relationship and not an


intense relationship.
Relation between interviewer and client

• The relationship between interviewer and client is special and unique.


The relationship facilitates the whole interviewing process

• For many a client talking with someone who listens with a non
judgmental understanding instead of criticizing or admonishing is
unique experience
• This relationship with person who does not ask anything for himself personally
but focuses on clients problem and help with advise or treatment.

• Because of this relationship client easily speak about problems and interviewer
understand very well.
CONCLUSION

 Intake interviewing is important and highly valued skills for clinicians. It


helps so many people for being positive towards any situations.
 The healing journey can be a fascinating, mysterious, meaningful. Clinicians
helps there clients really well to heal.
