PSYCHOSOCIAL ASSESSMENT SKILLS

PSYCHOSOCIAL

⚫The definition of psychosocial is relating to the combination of

psychological and social behavior.
⚫An example of psychosocial is the nature of a study that examines the
relationship between a person's behavior and thought and how he
relates to others in a social setting.
What is a Psychosocial Assessment?

⚫A psychosocial assessment is the social worker's summary as to the

problems to be solved.
⚫refers to a comprehensive assessment including an evaluation of needs
and risk. The assessment of needs is designed to identify those personal
psychological and environmental (social) factors that might explain an
act of self-harm.
⚫The social worker considers a variety of factors, which may include the
physical/psychiatric illness and its impact, results derived from
psychological tests, legal status, descriptions of the problem(s), existing
assets and resources, the prognosis or prediction of outcome, and the
plan designed to resolve the problem(s).
⚫A psychosocial assessment is actually a thorough and comprehensive
evaluation of an individual patient’s physical, mental, and emotional
health, along with his ability to function within a community and his
perception of himself. It is mainly conducted by social workers and
medical experts, and is a tool to learn facts about a person, as well as
determine his present and future behavior. It is a very important part of
every health care program that helps to set up a plan of management
and action for the medical team.
Conducting A Psychosocial Assessment

⚫Medical experts conduct this evaluation to shed light on some social or

psychological factor that may be affecting a person’s health, be it
physical or mental.

⚫Hence, it is very important that this examination be conducted in a way

that puts the patient at ease with the examiner.
⚫The one who is conducting the evaluation establishes a friendly rapport
with the patient so that the patient feels like opening up to the
examiner.
⚫The physical or mental problem(s) faced by the patient are carefully
studied so that the examiner has a complete idea of the causes,
symptoms, and impact of that problem.
⚫The patient’s strengths and weaknesses are all taken into consideration,
along with his personality, his likes and dislikes, his temperament, etc.
⚫The evaluator also tries to gain maximum information about any recent
social incidents or psychological factors that may have affected the
patient significantly.
• The assessment also takes into consideration the patient’s current and
previous lifestyle, along with his diet, addictions (if any) and
relationships.
Psychosocial assessment should:

⚫Communicate pertinent information about a client to colleagues for

case planning and referral purposes.
⚫Establish in writing an account of "where the client is at" at a particular
moment in time during service provision; the psychosocial assessment
account offers baseline information about the client when he or she
enters an agency for service.
Offer the social worker an opportunity to reflect on, refine thinking, and
raise questions about the client and his or her situation - to digest
information about and impressions about the client through the process
of writing about it.
STEPS INVOLVED IN ASSESSMENT

A. Identify the client - the first step in assessment is to determine who

your client thinking in terms of a client system helps you have a broader
perspective in deciding whom you need help.
Another important consideration in assessment of the client is having a
good group of the client's capacity for independent living or problem
solving.

Assessment of Physical Functioning Status - it is a presence or

absence of illness, disability, physical energy and strength, coordination,
medication, disfigurements, sensory capacities and other characteristics
that indicate psychological or health status.
Assessment of Cognitive Functioning Status - it refers to the
examination of reality, orientation, intellectual capacity, judgement,
flexibility, coherence of cognition, values and thier consistency with
behavior and self concepts.
Assessment of Emotional functioning - it is a presence or absence
of depression, anxiety or debilitating affect, range of emotion and the
style of controlling them to determine if it can affect the situation
appropriate.
Behavioral Functioning - evaluating social skills (sensitivity to others,
cooperativeness, and assertiveness), personal hygiene, grooming, degree
of organization, listing skills, self expression skills, behavioral reaction to
frustration, presence or absence of aggression, level of motivation and
willingness to be responsible.
B. Assessing the Client-in-situation from Macros, Mezzo, Macro amd
Diversity Perspective,

The social worker focusses on understanding the many aspects of a

problem and information about the client and about those aspects of yhe
clients environment. The information needed falls into (four) major
categories that include Micro, Mezzo and Macro levels of assessment in
addition to consideration of human diversity.
