Intercultural communication occurs not just between people who
are of different nationalities or age. It can also occur when people
differ in social status and religious beliefs.
Social Status  refers to one's standing in the community and his
position in the social hierarchy. 

• Ascribed social class is determined at birth through


characteristics such as age, sex, race, and family background.

• Achieved social class is acquired through a person’s ability,


talent, skill, and perseverance
Religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems,
and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence. 
Barriers in Communication

• Prejudging
• Information overload
• Lack of interest and attention
Strategies to Avoid Communication Breakdown

• Use time-gaining expressions to have more time to think.


• Give positive remarks or comments.
• Be specific.
• Ask for repetition or clarification.
• Check your understanding.
• Do not jump to conclusions.
Ways to Achieve Effective Communication

• Be focused.
• Speak intelligibly.
• Listen with your ears and eyes.
• Minimize distractions.
Types of Speech Style
• Intimate – participants share a completely private vocabulary,
making it difficult for others who are outside of the group to
understand.

• Casual – is a relaxed or informal dialogue between friends, peers,


colleagues, or family.

• Consultative – considered to be the most operational style among


the other styles.
• Formal – lack of listener participation. Communication is a one-
way process.

• Frozen – also called the oratorical style, is the most formal style
and is reserved for very formal situations such as in religious
services, state affairs, and court proceedings.
