CROSS-CULTURAL MANAGEMENT

What is CROSS-CULTURAL MANAGEMENT?

CULTURE refers to the behavior, customs or beliefs that is shared in a


society and influences the nature of the members sharing so

CROSS-CULTURAL MANAGEMENT is the system of handling and


managing cultures across various background

POWER DISTANCE
The extent where the workers with minimal power think and gradually
believe that power is distributed unequally.

Let’s learn POWER DISTANCE with an example-

In a regular working day, your boss comes at your desk and shout at you
for making a little mistake. You can’t speak up or give your statement.
Others are also looking at you being silent.
>> This situation demonstrates HIGH POWER DISTANCE.

On the other side, your boss comes and discusses important decisions
with you before finalizing something.
>> This act shows LOW POWER DISTANCE.
INDIVIDUALISM
The cultures that emphasize on individual needs and behaviors over a
group of people.

Individual culture includes-


 Independent belief
 Individual needs the center place and highly preceded
 Self-supporting tendency
 Autocratic culture

This culture totally contrasts collectivism


MASCULINITY
Cultures that follow more male-norms in various initiatives,
activities or attitudes. It is believed that, for the higher score in
social successes, people need to follow more masculine culture.

A high score in society refers to the


favor of MASCULINITY culture

A lower score demonstrates the opposite. It


shows FEMININITY is favored more.
UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE
People try to follow some rules to predict the uncertainties and
tend to handle their lives according to a plan.
But if they feel the situation unpredictable, they leave it.
>> This also shows the aspects of HIGH UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE
culture.

On the other side, LOW UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE demonstrates


the exact opposite view.
Here, people feel more ease and accept the disorganized situations
following the less rules as much as possible.
INDULGENCE
The culture that explains the level of controlling and suppressing
the desires and the way of living.
This is a very WEAK control over the cultures and behaviors.

But there is also STRONG control, that includes following strict


rules while crossing cultures and behaviors.
This kind of suppression is known as Restraint.
Time Orientation
A culture that refers to different attitudes regarding time, including
past, present and future.

>> LONG TERM ORIENTATION is followed when a society or


organization concentrate on the future, and focusing less on the short
term success or materials.

>> Whereas SHORT TERM ORIENTATION is all about fulfilling the


present hierarchy of the duties and responsibilities, and achieving short
term successes.
The challenges HR division faces while hiring or dealing with
different culture people-

• Lack in communication

• Completing duties

• Newer style while structuring policies

• The outcome of the changes

• Changes into regular rules
