Now the first covenant had regulations for

Heb. 9:1

worship and also an earthly sanctuary.

" `This is what the LORD Almighty, the God
JER 7:21

of Israel, says: … 22 … when I brought your

forefathers out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did
not just give them commands about burnt offerings
and sacrifices, 23 but I gave them this command:
Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be
my people.
Now the first covenant had regulations for
Heb. 9:1

worship and also an earthly sanctuary.

A tabernacle was set up. In its first room
HEB 9:2

were the lampstand, the table and the consecrated

bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the
second curtain was a room called the Most Holy
Place, 4 which had the golden altar of incense and
the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark
contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that
had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.
5
Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,
overshadowing the atonement cover. But we
cannot discuss these things in detail now.
When everything had been arranged like this,
HEB 9:6

the priests entered regularly into the outer room to

carry on their ministry.

SINNER
" `If a member of the community sins unintentionally
LEV 4:27

and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD's

commands, he is guilty. 28 When he is made aware of the
sin he committed, he must bring as his offering for the sin
he committed a female goat without defect. 29 He is to lay
his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at
the place of the burnt offering. 30 Then the priest is to take
some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns
of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the
blood at the base of the altar. 31 He shall remove all the
fat, just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering,
and the priest shall burn it on the altar as an aroma
pleasing to the LORD. In this way the priest will make
atonement for him, and he will be forgiven.
But only the high priest entered the inner
HEB 9:7

room, and that only once a year, and never without

blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins
the people had committed in ignorance.
Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu took their
LEV 10:1

censers, put fire in them and added incense; and

they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD,
contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from
the presence of the LORD and consumed them,
and they died before the LORD. 3 Moses then said
to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke of when
he said: " `Among those who approach me I will
show myself holy; in the sight of all the people I
will be honored.' " Aaron remained silent.
When they came to the threshing floor of
2SA 6:6

Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark

of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7 The LORD's
anger burned against Uzzah because of his
irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and
he died there beside the ark of God.

All these meticulous rituals were to PREPARE the high
priest to enter the Most Holy Place
A couple of notable comments from the video…
• “Entering the Most Holy Place during the ceremony was a
fearsome responsibility”

• “The people waited outside with anticipation… not knowing if

the high priest was still alive…”

• When he appeared the people rejoiced BECAUSE God had

accepted the sacrifice and their sins were atoned for”
The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the
HEB 9:8

way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been
disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still
standing.
This is an illustration for the present time,
HEB 9:9

indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being

offered were not able to clear the conscience of the
worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food and
drink and various ceremonial washings--external
regulations applying until the time of the new
order.
HEB 10:1
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are
coming--not the realities themselves. For this reason it
can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year
after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2
If it could, would they not have stopped being offered?
For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for
all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3
But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, 4
because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to
take away sins.
• The Holy Spirit was showing us that these regulations
were necessary b/c the way into the Most Holy Place
(direct access to God) had not yet been disclosed

• The continuous & meticulous nature of the sacrificial

system was to illustrate that the sacrifices were not able
to cleanse our consciences

• Animal sacrifices were the only way to approach God

UNTIL He introduced a new order… a new covenant

Which is what Hebrews 9 will now discuss…

When Christ came as high priest of the good
HEB 9:11

things that are already here, he went through the

greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not
man-made, that is to say, not a part of this
creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood
of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy
Place once for all by his own blood, having
obtained eternal redemption.
Now there have been many of those priests,
HEB 7:23

since death prevented them from continuing in

office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a
permanent priesthood.
Unlike the other high priests, he does not
HEB 7: 27

need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his

own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He
sacrificed for their sins once for all when he
offered himself.

For Christ did not enter a man-made
HEB 9:24

sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he

entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in
God's presence.

Day after day every priest stands and
HEB 10:11

performs his religious duties; again and again he

offers the same sacrifices, which can never take
away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for
all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the
right hand of God… 14 because by one sacrifice he
has made perfect forever those who are being
made holy.
The “Better” Covenant in Jesus Christ
•The better high priest
• Eternal priesthood b/c Jesus lives for ever
• A finished high priestly atonement b/c Jesus is sinless

•The better tabernacle

• Not man-made… Jesus served at the perfect genuine
sanctuary in heavenly itself

•The better sacrifice

• Not the blood of an animal… Jesus entered with His
own perfect blood
It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the
LK 23:44

whole land until the ninth hour, 45 for the sun stopped shining. JN 19:28
Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture
would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29 A jar of wine vinegar
was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of
the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30 When he had received
the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished."… 46 Jesus called out with a loud
voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said
this, he breathed his last. 30 …With that, he bowed his head. MT 27:50
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his
spirit. MT 27:51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in
two from top to bottom.

SINNER UNBELIEVER
Therefore, brothers, since we have
HEB 10:19

confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the

blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way
opened for us through the curtain, that is, his
body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the
house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a
sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having
our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty
conscience and having our bodies washed with
pure water.

The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of
HEB 9:13

a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially

unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly
clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of
Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself unblemished to God, cleanse our
consciences from acts that lead to death, so that
we may serve the living God! 15 For this reason
Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that
those who are called may receive the promised
eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a
ransom to set them free from the sins committed
under the first covenant.
