Objectives
At the end of the unit, the students must have:
• visualized the overview of the course; and
• defined society, community, education, social
interaction & school culture and other related
terms for this course.
INTRODUCTION TO SOCIETY, COMMUNITY AND EDUCATION
:DEFINING THE BASIC CONCEPT
SOCIETY

Society refers to the people who share a common culture and live together in a community.
• Merriam Webster defines society as a companionship or association with one's fellows.
• It is an organized group working together or periodically meeting because of common
interests, beliefs, or profession.
• A society is a group of people with common territory, interaction, and culture.

• ‘web of relationship’ and these relations are fundamental for understanding


human behaviour and different institutions of society.
COMMUNITY

Community- a group of people live together in a fixed territory, sharing one


common culture and having a sense of feeling among them (settlement,
village, city, tribe or nation).
Types of Communities: a. geographic community, b. ethnic, racial, and
religious communities, c. communities based on shared family or
educational concerns
EDUCATION

Education is the process of facilitating learning , or the acquisition of knowledge, skills,


values, beliefs and habits.
Educational methods include teaching, training, storytelling, discussion and directed
research.
Education can take place in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a
formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational.
The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy.

SOCIAL INTERACTION

A social interaction is an exchange between two or more individuals and


is a building block of society. It can be studied between groups of two
(dyads), three (triads) or larger social groups. By interacting with one
another, people design rules, institutions and systems within which they
seek to live. Most common forms of social interaction are exchange,
competition, conflict, cooperation, and accommodation.
SCHOOL CULTURE

According to Fullan (2007) school culture can be defined as the guiding


beliefs and values evident in the way a school operates. 'School culture'
can be used to encompass all the attitudes, expected behaviors and values
that impact how the school operates.
SOCIETY AND ITS INSTITUTION
Forms of Social Relations
a. Primary
b. Secondary
c. Tertiary

Role is a set of actions of an individual.


Social Status relative social position within a group.
Social norms are standards, rules, guides and expectations for
actual behaviour, whereas values are abstract conceptions of what
is important and worthwhile.
Individual and Society
-every individual is a member one society or other society.
-must be aware of different institutions of society playing significant contribution
towards continuity.

Family is the first school where children start their initial learning.

Religion is a pattern of social action organized around the beliefs and practices
that people develop to answer questions about the meaning of existence.
Individual and Society

Economy institution refers the rules, procedures and norms of


production, distribution, consumption as well as working system and
patterns.
Education is a social interaction through which a society’s children
are taught basic academic knowledge, learning skills, and cultural
norms.
Polity or Political institutions are defined as a system of control
through its organizations and legal or legitimate use of force.
