ROMANTICISM

GROUP 3
INTRODUCTION

 Romanticism, attitude or intellectual orientation that characterized many works of


literature, painting, music, architecture, criticism, and historiography in Western civilization over a period from
the late 18th to the mid-19th century. Romanticism can be seen as a rejection of the precepts of order,
calm, harmony, balance, idealization, and rationality that typified Classicism in general and late 18th-
century Neoclassicism in particular. It was also to some extent a reaction against the Enlightenment and against
18th-century rationalism and physical materialism in general. Romanticism emphasized the individual, the
subjective, the irrational, the imaginative, the personal, the spontaneous, the emotional, the visionary, and the
transcendental.
WHAT IS ROMANTIC?

 Romanticism was a movement among poets, intellectuals and writers that portrayed the natural
environment the subjective individual, and his or her emotional response to life from a subjective
impressionist perspective.
ROMANTIC ARCHITECTURE

 Romantic architecture appeared in the late 18th century in a reaction against the rigid forms of neoclassical
architecture. Romantic architecture reached its peak in the mid-19th century, and continued to appear until the end
of the 19th century. It was designed to evoke an emotional reaction, either respect for tradition or nostalgia for a
bucolic past. It was frequently inspired by the architecture of the Middle Ages, especially Gothic architecture, It
was strongly influenced by romanticism in literature, particularly the historical novels of Victor Hugo and Walter
Scott. It sometimes moved into the domain of eclecticism, with features assembled from different historic periods
and regions of the world.

 Romantic architecture emphasizes strong emotions as a source of aesthetic experience, putting new stress on
emotions such as fear, horror, and wonder as experienced by a sublime of nature. This movement promotes folk
art, nature and customs, and promotes epistemology based on nature, including human activities conditioned by
nature in the form of language, customs and traditions. Reviewing the explanation of romanticism above, the
architecture of romance is a concept in the design of an architectural building by promoting aesthetic values ​that
can be an impression and represent history.
FEATURES OF ROMANTIC ARCHITECTURE

 The building is perpendicular and looks ancient.


 The styles used are classical.
 Many use antic ornaments ranging from interior and exterior.
 
EXCESS OF ROMANTIC ARCHITECTURE

 Has an interesting shape.


 Classic and simple shape.
 Have some ornaments that have high creativity.
 The shape of the building has its own characteristics.
THE TAJ MAHAL

 located in the India state is one example of the


architectural building of Romanticism; Built
(1630-1653) The construction took 23 years.

 The Taj Mahal, completed in 1653, was Shah


Jahan's love for his late wife, Mumtaz Mahal,
who died in childbirth. When Shah Jahan died,
he was buried next to his late wife, in the
basement of the Taj Mahal.

a balance of symmetry, normal scale, balanced
proportions and unique blend and has a vocal
point on the central dome.

Persia, and Islam, the Taj Mahal comes with
exquisite exoticism from the material and
details.
EIFFEL TOWER

 (Paris, France) Inaugurated and opened on


March 31, 1889, this iconic French building
became a major destination for millions of
tourists from all over the world. Not only that,
the Eiffel Tower is known as the main icon in
the city full of romanticism, Paris. Many people
who make Eiffel as a place to express love and
apply for a lover.

anesthetized and greeted by a beautiful view of
Paris, the more Eiffel romance, although there
is no love story behind it.

romantic love can be present in the architecture
through the material, design, even ambience
and atmosphere of the building, making the
architecture not only a building but as a
meaning.
BOLDT CASTLE ON THE HEART ISLAND (NEW YORK, UNITED
STATES)

 Located in the Thousand Islands of New York,


Boldt Castle is a gift from George Boldt to his
wife, Louise, on Valentine's Day in 1905.

 The architectural style applied to this


castle is medieval and victorian
which is a special request from
Louise. Unfortunately, a year before
the Boldt Castle was completed,
Louise died at the age of 41. George
Boldt, who was drowning in grief,
decided to stop construction and
never return to the island.

 Although wrapped in sad stories, but today


many couples who come to marry at Boldt
Castle and feel the romance that existed
between George and Louise in the past.
