The term was popularized by the political scientist Ronald Inglehart in his 1977 book The Silent Revolution, in which he discovered
that the formative affluence experienced by the post-war generations was leading some of them to take their material security for
granted and instead place greater importance on non-material goals such as self-expression, autonomy, freedom of speech, gender
equality and environmentalism.

Inglehart argued that with increasing prosperity, such post-material values would gradually increase in the publics of advanced
industrial societies through the process of intergenerational replacement.

HISTORY

The sociological theory of postmaterialism was developed in the 1970s by Ronald Inglehart.

POSTMATERIALISM IN THE PAST

Post materialism can be considered in reference of three distinct concept of materialism.

one’s life does not consist in the abundance of wealth.” FREED FROM
Luke 12:15 DESIRE

Most religions view materialism as a worldly desire that must be

abandoned by humans. Freedom from lust is a divine attribute,
so one who is freed from lust is seen as a pious person, one with
God.

We can see the symbolism of the release of the human soul

from worldly desires towards nirvana through the architecture of
Borobudur Temple. Borobudur Temple is divided into three
levels, namely Kamadhatu (world of lust), Rupadhatu (world of
form), and Arupadhatu (the formless world).

Kamadhatu symbolizes human who are full of worldly desires,

Rupadhatu symbolizes human who have escaped worldly
desires but have not reached nirvana, and Arupadhatu
symbolizes humans who have completely separated from the
world and reach nirvana.
POSTMATERIALISM IN THE PAST

COMMUNIST
SOCIETY

Historical Materialism is a concept widely used by socialists. The

world order that the Socialists dream of is a world in which
humans work not to fulfill their physical needs but to fulfill their
psychological needs. This world order is called a Communist
Society which is classless, moneyless, and stateless. In this
context, the postmaterialism world according to the Socialists is
Communist Society.
