WHAT IS AN ACADEMIC
READING?

Academic Reading is defined as reading with a specifically academic and

educational purpose. Academic reading includes reading more traditional books,
dictionaries, encyclopedia, and journal articles, along with a vast number of
resources available online.
THE PURPOSE OF ACADEMIC
READING
1. Learn how to form arguments:
In most college classes except for creating writing, when instructors ask
you to write a paper, they expect it to be argumentative in style. This
means that the goal of the paper is to research a topic and develop an
argument about it using evidence and facts to support your position. Since
many college reading assignments (especially journal articles) are written
in a similar style, you’ll gain experience studying their strategies and
learning to emulate them.
THE PURPOSE OF ACADEMIC
READING
2. Exposure to different viewpoints:
One purpose of assigned academic readings is to give students exposure to
different viewpoints and ideas. For example, in an ethics class, you might
be asked to read a series of articles written by medical professionals and
religious leaders who are pro-life or pro-choice and consider the validity
of their arguments. Such experience can help you wrestle with ideas and
beliefs in new ways and develop a better understanding of how others’
views differ from your own.
STRATEGY FOR TEACH ACADEMIC
READING IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
 Strategy #1:
Encourage openness. Make your classroom a safe space for learning. The number
one barrier to improving reading comprehension is the fear of embarrassment. Many
elementary students feel too shy or too proud to admit when they find something
confusing—particularly in front of their fellow students. Encourage your students to
ask questions and let them know that it’s okay not to have all the answers. After all,
as we like to tell my students, it’s the teacher’s job to know and teach them the
answers.

 Strategy #2:
Identify specific problem areas (and solutions). It’s important for both you and your
students that they provide you with specific feedback. If they say they don’t
understand, ask them to tell you what, exactly, they are having trouble with, whether
it’s a specific element (e.g. a subplot they can’t quite follow in a novel) or a
particular sentence or paragraph.

 Strategy #3:
Use visual aids to help them “see” structure and individual elements.Graphic
organizers aren’t just for brainstorming—they can also come in handy for reviewing
a reading assignment. Especially for elementary students who may find building up
their reading comprehension a challenging process, rearranging the information
presented in the text can help them “see” and separate individual pieces of a literary
puzzle.

 Strategy #4:
Have them summarize what they have read.Teaching your students how to
appropriately summarize text can be a bit of a challenge especially if they haven’t
had a lot of practice in the past. We have all had students who write way too much
and students who write a single sentence.
STRATEGY FOR TEACH ACADEMIC
READING IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
The trick here is to get them to determine what was important and to put it into their
own words so they can better understand what they read. Summarizing helps
students:
• Odentify main ideas
• Break down larger ideas
• Focus on only the important details
• Remove unnecessary information
• Remember what they read and learned from their reading

CONCLUSION
Academic Reading is defined as reading with a specifically academic and
educational purpose. There's a lot of strategy, for example #encourage openness.
Make your classroom a safe space for learning.
The purpose of Academic Reading for Information comes from reputable sources
Web sites and blogs can be a source of insight and information, but not all are useful
as academic resources. They may be written by people or companies whose main
purpose is to share an opinion or sell you something. Academic sources such as
textbooks and scholarly journal articles, on the other hand, are usually written by
experts in the field and have to pass stringent peer review requirements in order to
get published.
