 A social-political novel focuses on the


neocolonial dependency and revolt in the
Philippines . The novel reflects Hernandez's
experience as a guerilla intelligence officer
when the Philippines was under Japaneses
occupation from 1942 to 1945.

SETTING

The story take place in the Middle of 1944,


when the armed forces of Japanese Empire
were losing.

It happens in the Philippines Country


were Philippines is under Japanese occupation
PLOT

The story begins in mid-1944, when the


empire of the Japanese attacked the Sapitan in
an attempt to snatch the Infanta from the
Filipino Guerillas. There was a clash, due to
lack of weapons of war almost the army of the
Filipinos was exhausted.
One of the survivors was Mando, as
Mando was walking through the forest to
escape he met Karyo and Martin at the same
time they go to Tata Matyas house
In the Seira Madre mountains 1944 the
guerilla Mando Plaridel with his comrades
Martin and Karyo knock the door of Tata
Matyas . There in the hut Mando found out
that the events and characters in Rizal's novels
Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were
true. Because of Tata matyas, Mando also
found out that the wealth of Simoun was
immersed in Pacific sea. The old man urged
Mando to take the said treasures to finance
the recovery of the country after the war.
With the help of the map given by Tata
matyas. They searched the sea with Karyo
and Martin where it is said that Simouns
treasures were dumped, they found it in
Atimonan . On their journey there they met
Magat who was the leader of a group of
guerillas. As Karyo and Mando dived in the
deep of sea they encountered a shark. Karyo
was seriously injured and he died.
A few days after Karyo's death Mando
continued to search for the treasure and
they were not disappointed. They saw the
trunk full of Simoun's jewelry, but when
this treasure was found, Martin was
betrayed he stabbed Mando trying to kill
it left a big scar on mando's face but
Mando fought and killed the treacherous
and greedy Martin.
Mando build a Kampilan. Mando left and went
abroad to have money for his kampilan. He
entrusted it to the same former guerillas Tata
Matyas, Mang Andress, Rubio and Dr.
Sabio.Mando also build a School called the
University of Independence that aims to
improve and protect Youth.
Despite the Victory Karyo died because of a
shark that attacked him while Martin was
killed by Mando because of his greed the war
also ended and there was peace and
tranquility again but with it was also the
return of unjust and selfish activities of some
people who has a good state in government.
CONFLICT

Character vs. Society - the protagonist is


placed in opposition with society. The
protagonist is against the selfishness of some
people in the government
Character vs. Nature - the character karyo
was died because of the shark when they dived
the deep of sea.
Person vs. Person - the novel is about the
war between the Japanese and the guerillas
filipino.
POINT OF VIEW

The point of view of the novel Mga ibong


mandaragit is Second Person because the
narrative voice implies that the reader is
either the protagonist or a character in the
story and the events are happening to them.
THEME

BIRDS OF PREY symbolize inequality of


equal view of people in society
