Anti-Laser The future is now

Presented By:- Namrata Bhardwaj

Introduction

 Laser has 50 years since laser was 1st invented by “Theodore

Maiman” in 1960.

 Anti-Laser built for 1st time in 17 feb 2011 by “Jeff-Hecht”.

LASER
Light amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

 Coherent

 Monochromatic

 Collimated

 Sharply Focussed

 In actual case, excite atoms from E1 to E3.

 Exciting atoms from E1 to E3 optical pumping.

.
 Atoms from E3 decays rapidly to E2 emitting h3.

 If E2 is a long lived state, atoms from E2 will not decay to E1 rapidly.

 Condition where there are a lot of atoms in E2 population inversion achieved!

i.e. between E2 and E1.
Coherent Photons Production
When one atom in E2 decays
spontaneously, a random photon
resulted which will induce stimulated
photon from the neighboring atoms.

The photons from the neighbouring

atoms will stimulate their neighbours
and form avalanche of photons.

Large collection of coherent photons

resulted.
Anti-Laser
 A coherent perfect absorber (CPA).

 Inverse of laser.

 Energy is released from the absorption process in the form of

heat.

 In conventional laser use a so-called “gain medium” whole in

anti laser “loss-medium” is used.
Formation of Anti-Laser
Device
 At “YALA University” the basic function of
laser & flipped it around introducing a device
that absorb rather than emits, a beam of light.

 This device is able to absorb 99.45% of all

incoming beam.

 The device which the scientist

call a “C.P.A” or more
popularly “Anti-Laser’.

The most popular anti-laser are,

G9 & G8 dual head.
Design of Device
 Identical laser are fired towards one-another through a piece of light-
absorbing material, like Si. This method substitute the “Gain Medium”
of a laser with a material which exhibits opposing properties. This
cause most of the “Photons” to be absorbed, while the remaining light
waves are cancel out by interfering with each other.
Application of Anti-Laser
 The most obvious use of anti-laser is in computing.

 The next generation of high performance computers are going to

have hybrid chips. These computer are called “Optic-computer” .

 For intense in new type of optical switches.

 In traffic, it is used as “LIDAR”:- e.g. Police laser radar.

 It is used also in radiology.

 It may also have medical application such as imaging a tumor.

Limitation
 Since anti-laser is a very new concept so it is not accessible to every
“NOOK & CORNER” around the globe.

 Even though the anti-laser absorbs perfectly, at a specific

wavelength thus it unsuitable for the application like solar-panels.

 It never be used as a potential laser-shield.
