What is Relay?
• A relay is an electrically operated switch. It c
onsists of a set of input terminals for a single
or multiple control signals, and a set of opera
ting contact terminals. The switch may have
any number of contacts in multiple contact f
orms, such as make contacts, break contacts,
or combinations thereof.
Relay
Classification of Relays:
• There are different types of relays including electro
magnetic relays, latching relays, electronic relays, n
on-latching relays, multi-dimensional relays and the
rmal relays which are classified based on the functi
on, application type, configuration or structural feat
ures, etc. Now we look at various types of relays wh
ich are more popularly used in many applications.

How relay works?
The relay function can be better understood by explai
ning the following diagram given below.

How relay works?
• The diagram shows an inner section diagram of a rel
ay. An iron core is surrounded by a control coil. As s
hown, the power source is given to the electromagn
et through a control switch and through contacts to
the load. When current starts flowing through the c
ontrol coil, the electromagnet starts energizing and
thus intensifies the magnetic field. Thus the upper c
ontact arm starts to be attracted to the lower fixed
arm and thus closes the contacts causing a short cir
cuit for the power to the load. On the other hand, if
the relay was already de-energized when the contac
ts were closed, then the contact move oppositely an
d make an open circuit.
Applications of relay:
Relay circuit is used to realize logic functions. They play a very importa
nt role in providing safety critical logic.

Relays are used to provide time delay functions. They are used to time
the delay open and delay close of contacts.

Relays are used to control high voltage circuits with the help of low volt
age signals. Similarly they are used to control high current circuits with
the help of low current signals.

They are also used as protective relays. By this function all the faults du
ring transmission and reception can be detected and isolated.

Thank you.
