Anation Reactions

 Anation Reactions are those reactions in which water
molecules from an aquo-complex are removed by
some anions.
 The reverse reaction, displacement of an anionic ligand by
water, is called aquation (acid hydrolysis).

Let us discuss a general reaction
[M(H2O)]n + X-  [M(X)]n-1 + H2O
&
[Co(NH3)5(H2O)]3+ + Br− → [Co(NH3)5Br]2+ + H2O
Mechanism

 The Reaction is S 1 Reaction.
N

 It Comprises of Two Steps.(Slow & Fast)

Explanation:
[Co(CN)5(H20)]2- + E- ------->[Co(CN)5(E)]3- +H20
1st & Slow Step
[Co(CN)5(H20)]2- -------->[Co(CN)5]2- + H20
2nd & Fast
[Co(CN)5]2- + E- ------>[Co(CN)5(E)]3-

Effect of metals charge density

 Charge density=Charge on metal/radius of metal
(higher the charge density of central metal more
stronger will be its bond with H2O and slower will be
the reaction rate
Cs+ >Rb+>K+>Na+>Li+
Conclusion

 Since reaction takes place in more than one step so there
is slow step and rate of reaction depends on slow step
which is called rate determining step.
 So
 Rate=K[Complex]
 In this way rate only depends on concentration of
complex.
 It is the reverse of Acid Hydrolysis.
 . Some of the substitutions reactions occur without
breaking metal-legand bond.

 What is the basic difference between aquation and
Anation reaction?
