Overview
• The lecture covers different • At the end of the lesson

READING

• It is a process of decoding symbols to derive meanings from


text (as in reading books).
• It is the most important skill in any language from other
language skills in acquiring knowledge. If students are good in
reading they will be good in other language skills (writing,
speaking and listening)
COMPONENTS OF READING
There are three components of reading:
• Decoding
• Comprehension
• Retention
COMPONENTS OF READING

• Decoding: Process of translating a printed word in to


a sound.
• Comprehension: It is the level of understanding a
text/messages.
• Retention: Condition of retaining(keeping) something.
IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH READING
• Reading is fundamental to function in
today’s society.
• It develops imagination.
• It is vital skill in finding a good job.
• English is the official language of 53
countries.
• It develops the mind
• It is how we discover new things
• It develops creative side of people
• It develops vocabulary
TYPES OF READING
• There are four types of reading techniques:

• Skimming
• Scanning
• Intensive
• Extensive
Skimming
• Skimming is a quick reading to get:

• The general meaning of the text


• To know how passage is organized
• To get the Author’s purpose
• To review a topic
EXAMPLES

• The Newspaper (quickly to get the


general news of the day)

• Magazine (quickly to discover which


article you would like to read in
more detail)

• Business and travel Brochures


(quickly to get informed)
SCANNING
• A quick reading focusing on locating
specific information.

• It involves quick eye movement, not


necessarily linear in fashion but until
reader finds the desired piece of
information.
EXAMPLES
• The “WHAT’S ON TV”
section (itinerary) of your
newspaper.

• A train/airplane schedule.

• A telephone directory.
EXTENSIVE READING

• Extensive reading is carried out “To achieve a


general understanding of a text”.

• Extensive reading is used to obtain a general


understanding of a subject as well as reading
longer text for pleasure.

• The aims of extensive reading are to build


reader’s confidence and enjoyment.
EXAMPLES
• The latest marketing strategy book.

• A novel you read before you going to


bed.

• Magazine articles that interest you.


INTENSIVE READING
• Intensive reading is used on shorter
texts in order to extract specific
information.

• It includes very close accurate reading


for detail.

• In this case, it is important that you


understand each word , number or
facts.
EXAMPLES
• A bookkeeping report.

• An insurance claim.

• A contract.
