BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In over a year, the world experienced an unprecedented shift in way of
life due to COVID-19 and education changed as a result of covid-19
crisis.
Schools and universities moved online and some blending face-to-face
with online lectures, radio, social media and TV broadcasts and others
diverted to modular learning. CHED and DEPED implemented the
flexible mode of blended learning despite many oppositions led by some
students and parents.
As the classes resumed, there are individuals, most of which were
students crying for academic freeze due to the disadvantage posed by
the new normal on education. (Navarosa and Fernando,2020)
In this current situation it is important to know how the students feels
and how they cope with the challenges and struggles.
With the occurrence of the Covid-19 pandemic, where home becomes
school and personal life is very much affected, it is necessary to look
into the experiences of the students in this new normal
FACE TO FACE LEARNING

It is when the students and teacher meet physically for one on one or group learning.

DISTANCE LEARNING

It is a type of learning that happens when teachers and learners are separated from each
other.
It has three types:
Modular Distance Learning (MDL)
- specific teaching that let students use modules for self-learning either in hard or soft copy documents.
Online Distance Learning (ODL)
-In online learning teacher serves as a facilitator, allowing students to participate through the use of
smartphones and other devices with the help of internet.
Blended Learning
-is a learning delivery that combines face-to-face with any or a mix of online distance learning,
modular distance learning, and TV/Radio-based Instruction.
Benefits of Studying through Distance Learning

Students can study anywhere

Accessibility
Distance learning is far more affordable as compared to physical learning
Several impacts brought by distance learning to students

Some research shown that students have started to get bored with online learning
after the first two weeks of learning from home.
There is considerable anxiety on students whose parents have low income.
Mood changes occur due to too many assignments and are considered ineffective by
students. (Irawan,et. al, 2020).
Most importantly, scientific articles, polls, and many students show that mental
health, along with fatigue and digital eyes strain, are not something to be taken
lightly during this pandemic which places the importance on physical health. (Code
and Jett,2020)
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought schools to shut down and resort to
different types or mode of education in the new normal. Education has
changed drastically with the distinctive rise of distance learning in
which education are mostly brought in online platform. Education are
done remotely. Distance learning provided many advantages. However,
it also posed several negative impacts like it resulted to some social
isolation, lack of communicational skill development and cheating
issues.
This study aims to determine the effects of the new normal in
education among Senior High School students and to contribute
to possible changes needed to better improve the current set up
of education in the school system.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study aims to look deeper into the effects of the new normal in
education specifically in Senior High School Students. Particularly, the
research also aims to answer the following questions:
How do the Senior High School Students cope with the challenges
and struggles brought about the new normal in education?.
What are the favorable and adverse effects or result in the changes in
the respondents’ study habits?
What are the areas of participants’ personal and social experiences
that have been affected by sudden shift of mode of education?.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is of great significance to the current curriculum makers. In which, can make
adjustments on the current offered curriculum for the students in the new normal.
The results of the study will be of great benefit to the students. The results will provide
the students with some knowledge on how to cope with the new normal in education.
They will also be able to compare their own experiences with the respondents' shared
experiences.
It will also be beneficial to teachers. They will be able to realize how the students
experience during this new normal and adapt their mode of teaching based on the
students' needs.
It will also be of significance to parents to further understand how the new normal
works and its effects to their children and be able to take part and help for the
betterment of the students
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A qualitative research method will be used in the study to address the research
question.
 It uses in-depth analysis of small groups of people for building theories (Carol,
2016).
With the aim to understand the meaning of students' lived experience, the research
will use phenomenology as a strategy of inquiry; specifically, the researcher will
employ the strategies and techniques of Interpretative phenomenological Analysis
(IPA).
IPA suits the study because of its focus on the detail at how someone makes sense of
life experience, and provision for detailed interpretation of the account to
understand the experience (Tuffour, 2017).
This is a particularly useful methodology for examining topics which are complex,
ambiguous and emotionally laden (Smith and Osborn, 2014).
It also aims to capture and explore the meanings that participants assign to their
experiences (Reid et al., 2005).
IPA, with its strategies and assumptions, provides direction to the objectives of this
study to determine the effects of the new normal in education among Senior High
School students.
RESPONDENTS AND SAMPLING PROCEDURE
The respondents will compose of 30 upcoming grade 11 and 12 students of Saint
Ferdinand College Cabagan Campus.
With the shared experiences with variations in their characteristics and in their
individual experiences, the researcher will purposively select the respondents with a
set of criteria.
To be eligible, the respondent should be officially enrolled grade 11 and student of
Saint Ferdinand College Cabagan Campus at the time the data is to be collected,
must also be using online mode of learning.
The respondents will be recruited personally via social media channels such as
messenger and Instagram.
The researcher will also coordinate with their respective advisers for the intended
sampling procedure.
RESEARCH TOOLS/ DATA GATHERING TOOLS

The researcher has devised a semi-structured interview guide which includes

questions on their personal experiences, reactions and views of their personal and
social experiences with the current education set up.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

The data will be gathered through individual online interview with the respondents,
either via Zoom meeting or Messenger Video call.
An informed consent to use video recording will be secured from the respondents.
The researcher will use a standardized open ended interview in which, there will be
a set of same open ended questions which will be asked to all the respondents.
This approach will facilitate faster interviews that can be more easily analyzed and
compared.
DATA ANALYSIS

In this study, we will be using Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).

It is an approach to psychological qualitative research with an idiographic focus,
which means that it aims to offer insights into how a given person, in a given
context, makes sense of a given phenomenon.
The researchers will use this for data analysis to explore in detail how participants
are making sense of their personal and social world, and the main currency for an
IPA study is the meanings particular experiences, events, states hold for participants.
