Features of ESM
 Each ESM can support 50,000 subscribers as a USM.
 Each ESM can support 10,000 trunk circuits as a TSM.
 Each ESM can support 30,000 subscribers and 4000 trunk
circuits as a UTM.
 Main Control Module, Interface Module and Centralized
Number Receiving Module are in one Rack.

Features of ESM
 Use A32, one user can access to up to 608 subscribers.
 Compatible with SM, and existing SM can be upgraded to ESM
smoothly.
 Can provide E1 uplink to AM/CM, number of E1 can be
expanded smoothly.
 Can provide 2 STM-1 optical interfaces to AM/CM, can work
together with SM and RSM.

Features of ESM
 Switch network is 16Kx16K.
 If the connection to the central module is broken, ESM can
perform the switching function independently, to support intra-
module call, outgoing call and store the bills generated.
 Backdoor trunk: ESM can provide outgoing trunk, which can
support SS7, R2 and PRA.

Features of ESM
 Side door trunk: Two ESM can provide inter-connection trunk.
The speech connection will not go through the central module,
on the other hand, when one module is broken from the central
module, it can act as the lower module of the other module, to
contact with the central module.
 Support SSP. ESM can provide second number receiving, and
provide signal tone resources, can trigger the intelligent service
independently.

Hardware Structure of ESM
 XNET is 16Kx16K switching network. Each OTU (optical
Transfer Unit) can provide one 155M optical interface.
 Interface Frame: Trunk Interface Frame. Each ET16 can
provide 16 E1s; Each STU board can provide one 155M optical
interface. Each H16 board can provide 16 HW to connect the
ASL frames.
 MEM: Intelligent Service Interface board. Each can provide one
10/100M Ethernet Interface.

ESM Control Principle

ESM Switch Network
 ESM can support 2 XNET boards. Two boards work in active /
standby mode.
 XNET can perform the time switching of the subscribers'
speech and signaling system, it is a switching matrix of 16K x

16K.
 8K time slots for the two 393M optical interface from XNET
to QSI boards in Interface Frame.
 4K time slots to OTU boards for 2 STM-1 interfaces uplink

to AM/CM.

ESM Switch Network
 3K time slots to be compatible with SM, to realize the

switching and transfer of subscriber speech and signaling.
 1K timeslots are used to support expanding user frame or

trunk frame by the HW expansion board on the back of
OTU board.
 It can also support 64-party conference and 192 time slots

FSK.

 When an ESM functions as a pure subscriber module, its
interface frame can be configured with sixty-four 32-channel
RSP subscriber frames, 38,912 subscribers totally.
Correspondingly, it is necessary to configure two and a half
DRV frames, twenty HWs and six nodes.

 The other forty-four HWs from the switching network board can
be used to connect eleven 32-channel local subscriber frames,
6,688 subscribers totally. The thirty-two HWs from the HWD
board can connect eight 32-channel subscriber frames, 4,864
subscribers totally. Thus, 50,464 subscribers can be accessed.

ESM Data Setting
 Add a ESM module （ ADD ESM ）；
 Add main control frame （ ADD CFB ）；
 According to the requirements , modify the board configuration:
Remove board （ RMV BRD ）、 Add board （ ADD BRD ）
 According to the requirements , add Interface frame （ ADD
LIMFB ）、 add DRV frame （ ADD DRVFB ）、 add Digital
Trunk frame （ ADD DTFB ） and User frame （ ADD USF
B ）；
ESM Data Setting
 According to the requirements, modify the board configuration
in Interface frame ,DRV frame and DTF and user frame:
Remove board （ RMV BRD ）、 Add board （ ADD BRD) ；
 Maintain card status （ MNT BRD ）；
 Add ESME1 （ ADD ESME1 ）， configure E1 type and E1

mode, and configure OTU’s E1 type as IDT ；
 Add E1 configuration （ ADD E1CFG ）， configure E1

between AM/CM and ESM.

ESM Trunk Data Setting
 Compared with SPM and SM CCS7 trunk data setting, ESM
CCS7 trunk data setting are different in trunk circuit and CCS7
link setting .
 The related command are:
 ADD SMN7LNK-----Define CCS7 link in ESM.
 ADD SMN7TKC-----Define CCS7 trunk circuit in ESM,
