 Introduction

The term computer is derived from the world compute. A

computer is an electronic device thah takes data and instruction
as an input from the user , processes data, and provide useful
information known as output. This cycle of operation of a
computer is known as the input - process - output cycle and as in
shown.

 Classification of Computer

Computer is classified into several cargories depending

on their computing categories depending on their
computing ability and processing speed. These include
• Microcomputer
• Minicomputer
• Mainframe computer
• Supercomputer
 Hardware
Hardware refers to the physical elements of a computer. This is also
sometime called the machinery or the equipment of the computer.
Computer hardware is what you can physically touch. The electronic
device is also known as hardware

Examples of hardware in a computer;

are the keyboard, the monitor, the mouse and the central
processing unit.
 Software
Software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to operate
computers and execute specific tasks. The programs and other
operating information used by a computer. Software is a program
that enables a computer to perform a specific task, as opposed to
the physical components of the system (hardware)
Examples of applications ;
include office suites, database programs, web browsers, word
processors, software development tools, image editors and
communication platforms.
 Input Devices
In computing, an input device is a piece of equipment used to
provide data and control signals to an information processing system
such as a computer or information appliance.

Examples of input devices include

keyboards, mouse, scanners, cameras, joysticks, and
microphones

 Output Devices
In output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment
which converts information into human-readable form. It can be
text, graphics, tactile, audio, and video.

Some of the output devices are;

Visual Display Units (VDU) i.e. a Monitor, Printer, Graphic
Output devices, Plotters, Speakers etc.
