PRIMITIVISM

• Primitivistic music is tonal


through the stressing one note as
more important than others
• Primitivism combines two
familiar or simple ideas together
creating new sounds
Primitivism has link to exoticism through
the use of materials from other cultures,
to nationalism through the use of
materials indigenous to specific country,
and to ethnicism through the use of
materials from European ethnic groups.
• Two well known proponent of
this style were
• Bela bartok
• Stravinsky
Bela Bartok (1881-1945)
• Bartok was born in Romania on march 25, 1881
• He started his piano lesson with his mother and
later entered Budapest Royal academyof music
in 1899.
• Bartok was inspired by the performance of
richard strauss also sprach Zarathustra to write
his first nationalistic poem kosuth in 1903.
• In 1906 he published his 20 Hungarian folk
song.
• As neo classicist, primitivist and nationalistic
composer bartok used hungarian folk themes
and rhytmms.
• His composition were successful because of
their rich melodiesand lively rhythms
• Bartok famous work is six string quartet(1908-
1938).
• These represent the greatest achievement of
his creative life.
• The concerto for orchestra(1943) a five
movement work composed late in bartoks life,
it features the exceptional talents of its
various soloist in constructed piece
• Allegro barbaro (1911)- for solo piano is
punctuated with swirling rhytmns and
percussive chords
• Mikrosmos (1926-1939) - a set of six books
containing progressive technical pieces.
• Bartoks approximately 700 musical composition
• He died on september 26, 1945 in new york city.
