Special Education Teaching and Hand Washing
Capstone Course
Abstract
I have always wanted to find a career where I can
help and teach others to become a better person in
society. In this course I was able to find how I can
use my goals into a career. The career that I found
that was a special education teacher . Special
education teaching incorporates using my own
personal skills to teach and help improve
themselves. I was able to break it down to special
education teaching because there are less students
in the class which leaves room for closer student
teacher interactions. The personal student teacher
interactions will help the students in improving in
their atmosphere. However, there has been
struggles to the everyday interaction. The
coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible for
the close relationships.
Background
The special education teaching career gives
the opportunity to provide to the nontypical
peers of an everyday school. The special
education teachers provide a safe space and
focused learning environment that otherwise
would not be offered. For this reason,
special education teacher brings the mix of
helping and teaching others into being the
best that they can be.

Applied Learning Project
In this project I was able to utilize the need for
protection against covid and educate the
students on the proper forms of self protection
that doesn’t only send benefits against the virus
but for protecting their everyday health. I made
a lesson plan to assist the students in a guided
quiz on handwashing. This lesson is familiar to
the students but since their way of holding
information is different, they require multiple
reinforcements for understanding checks so
that they can retain the information they are
taught stay for longer.
The students will first get a review on the steps
of handwashing and then be asked to follow the
three-step guide for handwashing. Next, the
students used popsicle sticks, spoons, or pencils
labeled one through three to place the
corresponding pictures in order. Finally, we
moved to the kitchen to practice the lesson
using the UV powder to represent the germs
that the students pick up throughout the day and
they first washed their hands as they learned
and then I showed the germs with the UV light.

Career Connection
The handwashing lesson connects to
the protection of students in the face-
to-face classroom of the coronavirus
world. The protection and the lesson
gives practice to me for my special
education teaching and public speaking
skills. The lesson also gives the
students an opportunity to receive
health tips they can use throughout
their lives. The special education
students lack the typical developmental
skills that their typical peers have. In
the lesson, they can repeat the tools in
order to keep their protection in mind.
Teaching protection to students in need
help connect to my passion of helping
others.
Reflection
The lesson plan did not involve all the online
students who could not make it to school.
The students online were not able to have
the UV powder on their hands that gave the
physical representation of germs.
Conclusion
I would want to bring in an aspect that
can involve the students online and how
the handwashing truly helps in the real
world. The lesson gave the students an
entry level insist to handwashing and
the importance of it. The students were
engaged but showed little to now
excitement. The importance of a lesson
to nontypical learners is their
excitement, so if I provided them with
ways that could gravitate substantial
interest, they would retain the
information better and longer.
