sentence.
Commas in Complex Sentences
• Use a comma if the sentence begins with a dependent clause
• (A subordinate clause, dependent clause or embedded clause is a clause that
is embedded inside another clause. For instance, in the English sentence "I
know that Bette is a dolphin", the clause "that Bette is a dolphin" occurs as the
complement of the verb "know" rather than as a freestanding sentence)
• No comma is needed if the dependent clause comes after an independent clause.
For example; My Dad laughed when I told a joke.

• Note: Connect to build prior knowledge. This will identify the problem, connect
oral language and reading. Students have to write as many complex sentences
as they can. They can refer to an anchor chart.
Commas with Quotes

• If a quote is a statement and comes before the name of the

person who spoke, use a comma at the end of the statement,
before the second quotation mark.

• Example: John said, “I really hate when it’s hot outside.”

• Note: Introduce a quote words like, I said, asked. A quotation marks

as follow by a comma unless they are at the beginning of the
sentence.
