Defending The Value of ....
and Logic of
Qualitative Research
Introduction
• Writers of qualitative research proposals
must develop a sound rationale for the
choice of methodology. Although this
must be demonstrated for any research
proposal, with qualitative proposals the
need may be especially acute.
Developing a logic that will solidly
defend the proposal entails three large
domains:
(a) responding to criteria for the overall soundness of the
project,
(b) demonstrating the usefulness of the research for the
conceptual
framework and research questions, and
(c) showing the sensitivities and
sensibilities to be the research instrument.
• Careful consideration of each will
help the proposal writer develop a
logic in the support of the
proposal.
Criteria of Soundness
• All research must respond to canons of
quality—criteria against which the
trustworthiness of the project can be
evaluated. These canons can be phrased as
questions to which all social science research
must respond (Lincoln & Guba, 1985).
1. How credible arc the particular findings of the
study? By what criteria can we judge them?
2. How transferable and applicable are
these findings to another selling or group of people?
3. How can we be reasonably sure that the findings
would be replicated if the study were
conducted with the same participants in the same
context?
4. How can we be sure that the findings reflect the
participants and the inquiry itself rather than a
fabrication from the researcher’s biases or
prejudices?
• Lincoln and Guba (1985) refer to these
questions as establishing the “truth
value” (p. 290) of the study, its
applicability, consistency, and neutrality.
Every systematic inquiry into the human
condition must address these issues.
• Although Lincoln and Guba match
these terms to the conventional
positivist paradigm—internal validity,
external validity, reliability, and
objectivity— they then demonstrate the
need to rework these constructs for
naturalistic or
qualitative inquiry.
Lincoln and Guba (1985) propose four alternative
constructs that more accurately reflect the
assumptions of the qualitative paradigm.
