What Is Soil Pollution?
Soil pollution is defined as the presence of toxic chemicals (pollutants
or contaminants) in soil, in high enough concentrations to pose a risk to
human health and/or the ecosystem.
Types of Soil Contaminants
• LEAD (PB) • MERCURY (HG) • ARSENIC (AS)
• Potential sources: lead • Potential sources: • Potential sources:
paint, mining, foundry mining, incineration of mining, coal-fired
activities, vehicle exhaust, coal, alkali and metal power plants,
construction activities, processing, medical electronics industry
agriculture activities waste grown on polluted
soils
• HERBICIDES/INSECTICIDES
• Potential sources:
agricultural activities;
gardening

SOURCES OF SOIL POLLUTION
Natural Pollutant
• There are a couple of natural causes of soil pollution. They
include the natural production of minerals and the
accumulation of salt compounds in the soil. Accumulation of
salt compounds happens because of the natural imbalances
between atmospheric depositions and leaching caused by rain
water.
• An example is the accumulation of perchlorate in the soils in
arid environs. Under certain environment conditions and
natural processes, perchlorate is formed in the soil. In such
conditions, perchlorate is created in the presence of metallic
mineral components and chlorine by utilizing the energy
produced by thunderstorms. These aspects qualify as some of
the natural causes of soil pollution.
SOURCES OF SOIL POLLUTION
Man Made Pollutant

• Spills and leaks (Oil & Toxic)

• Deforestation
• Mining activities
• Chemical waste dumping
• The storage of waste in landfills
EFFECTS ON ENVIRONMENT

• Air and Water Contamination

EFFECTS ON HUMAN

• Economic Losses
• Health Problems
• Homeless
SOIL CONSERVATION
REPUBLIC ACT NO. 622 – AN ACT CREATING THE BUREAU OF
SOIL CONSERVATION DEFINING ITS DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
To recommend and regulate the application of fertilizers for the
maintenance of desirable soil properties for the establishment of
optimum conditions for plant growth.
To investigate causes of soil erosion and develop and promote erosion
control practices with a view to checking or minimizing accelerated
erosion, and at the same time to increase crop production.
To operate regional soil conservation in the fields to carry out
agronomic, engineering, forestry, range, and biological phases of soil
erosion control and sound land use within the region.
TRIVIA

Fact 1: There are more living organisms in a handful of

soil than there are people on earth.

Fact 2: Restoring Global Soil Health Could Stop Climate

Change

Fact 3: Soil Is Our Most Precious Resource
