In LTE system, ICIC is an approach to improve the coverage performance

while may be at the cost of losing capacity performance to some extent.

Two-step reuse pattern configuration
Primary
mode
Secondary
mode

• 6 Basic SFR reuse patterns generated from 3 SFR reuse patterns

• All cells will be configured with a primary SFR reuse pattern. Some cells can be configured with a
secondary SFR reuse pattern.
• The reuse pattern can be changed according to interference and cell load distribution

eRAN6.0 – Main Functionalities
• Adaptively switch on ICIC at cluster level
Self- • Avoid ICIC performance loss at low interference/load scenarios (e.g. initial network launch)
or noise-dominant scenarios (e.g. rural areas, large ISD), etc
Adaptation • Based on long term cell load, long term mutual interference level(reflecting) network
topology), etc

• Adaptively assign/update SFR reuse pattern to each cell

• Two-step SFR reuse pattern configuration
• First step achieves reuse 3 (applicable for both UL and DL )
Self- • Second step achieves reuse 6 (applicable for DL only)
• Adapt to the change of the mutual inter-cell interference caused by long term change of
Configuration network topology and UE distribution
• Cells with low cell edge load or low interference for a long term may fall back to reuse 1
• Based on cell load, UE/traffic distribution, mutual interference level

• Slow Optimization (eCoordinator)

• SFR reuse pattern optimization, self transition between reuse1, reuse 3 and reuse 6
Self- • Adapt to the change of mutual interference at hour level (e.g. busy hour or spare
hour may have different interference situations)
Optimization • Fast Optimization(eNodeB)
• Classify high power and low power users according to reported interference
• Scheduling high power users at cell edge band and lower users at cell center band

Adaptive ICIC for Uplink
• Uplink aICIC follows the configuration and optimization result of
downlink.
• Because LTE uses Single Carrier - Frequency Division Multiple Access
(SC-FDMA) in the UL, UEs can work only on continuous UL bands. To
prevent the UL band from being too fragmented, a cell cannot use the
Reuse6 mode in the UL. Uplink only supports Reuse1 and Reuse3
adaptation.

Simulation Results – Self-Config

Reuse 3 Reuse 3 and 6

Adaptation
Results
• For London map, Self-config of reuse 3 automatically assign reuse pattern to neighbor cells, however, due to
more complex network topology, reuse 3 is not enough to avoid conflict pairs
• By introducing reuse 3 and 6 adaptation in eRAN 3.0, most of the conflict problems are solved by giving
new reuse pattern. Meanwhile, for those cells without conflict problems, can also maintain 1/3 of the system
bandwidth as their edge band
