Coordinate System
Objectives:
1. Identify important imaginary
lines on the globe/map used in
locating places;
2. Label the imaginary lines on the
globe; and
3. Show the importance of
imaginary lines in locating places.
1. Which of the following illustrations represent the lines of latitude?
2. An imaginary line dividing the earth’s surface
into two hemispheres the Northern Hemisphere
and Southern Hemisphere, it is located at 0º,

5. Why imaginary lines are set
on a globe or map?
A. To locate places
B. To travel abroad
C. To ask directions
D. To give directions
REVIEW
Below are the characteristics of map
and globe, identify each characteristic
whether for map or globe or both,
write “M” if it’s for map, “G” for globe
or “B” for both, write your answer on
the space provided.
___________1. Shows legends or
symbols of a place
___________2. Represents the
model of the earth as round like a
ball
___________3. Has seven continents
and their locations
___________4. Consists of
compass rose.

___________5. Has features of an

area such as mountains, rivers, and
lakes.
Where is the Philippines?
Earth Asian continent

coordinate system
What is COORDINATE SYSTEM?
- is an arrangement of reference lines
or imaginary lines on the globe.
What are these imaginary lines?

•latitude,
•longitude,
•equator, and
•prime meridian
Latitude
• Are horizontal lines;
• It is progressive
angular measurements
north or south of the
equator.
• Are imaginary lines
running from east to west
on the Earth’s surface.
Longitude
- are vertical lines;
- it gives the measurements east
or west of the Prime Meridian.
- are imaginary lines running
from the North Pole to the
South Pole.
- Lines of longitude are often
referred to as meridians.
Equator
-An imaginary line dividing
the earth’s surface into two
hemispheres; Northern
Hemisphere (half of the
globe from equator to North
Pole) and Southern
Hemisphere (half of the
globe from equator to South Figure 3. Equator

Pole).
Prime meridian
- An imaginary line
dividing the earth’s
surface into two
hemispheres; Western
Hemisphere and
Easter Hemisphere.
Lets check if you had learned something in
this lesson by doing the following activity.
• I am going to present to you a statement about imaginary
lines. You write in your paper the correct word that would
complete each statement.
1. (Latitude, Longitude) is an imaginary line that runs through
the Earth’s surface from West to East.
2. Equator is the longest parallel that divides the Earth into
two hemispheres (Western and Eastern, Northern and
Southern).
3. All latitudes are (parallel, perpendicular) to the Equator.
4. Latitudes are measured in (meters, degrees).
5. As we move away from the Equator towards the Poles, the
length of the latitude (increases, decreases).
6. Longitudes are used to locate places in (north and south,
west and east).

7. A/An (coordinate system, equator) is a network of

intersecting latitudes and longitudes.

8. (Prime meridian, Equator) serves as a reference point for

measuring the distance east or west, located at zero degree
(0º).
9. North pole and South pole both measured (90°, 0°).
10. All longitudes are (parallel, perpendicular) to the Equator.
Study the image of the globe below then, identify
the parts that are labelled in the image.

To summarize the lesson, lets try to answer
these questions.
Write true if the sentence is correct. If it is false, change
the underlined word/words to make the sentence correct.
Write your answers on your paper.

___________1. Coordinate system is consisting of latitude,

longitude, equator, and prime meridian.

___________2. Latitudes are imaginary lines running from

west to east on the Earth’s surface.
___________3. Prime meridian serves as a
reference point for measuring the
distance east or west.
___________4. Equator is located at ninety
degrees (90º).
___________5. Lines of longitude are often
referred to as parallels.
Why it is important to use directory
map?
