Geographical indication
• GI tag represents a geographical indication

• GI-sign, name, or symbol used on products having a specific


geographical origin and possessing qualities (or) reputation due to the
origin
• To achieve the GI tag-the product and quality depend on the
geographical place of production

are covered as an element of IPRs
• GI is governed by World Trade Organization(WTO) Agreement on
Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)

(Registration and Protection Act), 1999

• Pattamadai is the neighbor village to Cheranmahadevi, ranges about 3


Kilometers from Cheranmahadevi and 20 Kilometers from Tirunelveli in
Tamilnadu India
• Pattamadai resides along the banks of the river Tamaraparani
• It is world famous -silken mats woven from grass
• The majority of mats made in here have cotton warps and korai wefts
• Korai belongs to the sedge family of plants, Cyperaceae
• Korai grass grows -swampy lands and riverbeds
• Korai mats divided in three categories
• classification depends on the weave: Coarse weave, medium and the
fine weave
• The outer skins of the grass is stripped to bring out the fine strand
from within for weaving the finer variety
• Coarse mats are rough in texture, relatively quick to weave and made
using either a handloom or power loom
• Fine texture-Higher quality handloom mats
• highest quality texture -silk
• mats the korai is soaked in running water for up to a week begins to rot, the
central pith scraped off and each stem split into fine strands, dried and dyed
• finer mat -the longer the korai needs to soak and the thinner the weft strands

Process of korai grass
• Conventional method of mat making involves lengthy processes of drying,
soaking, splitting and dyeing the grass
• The harvest season -months of September, October and February, March
• The grass  is cut green and the Strips of grass are sun-dried and not to exposed to
humidity (turn black with the exposure)
• the dried grass strips turn a yellowish green, boiled in a pot of water and dried
• Bundles of  dried grass are then soaked in running water and placed below the
surface of the water for three to seven days
• This process makes the grass-swell to three times its original size
• After the grass are dried again and take to a floor loom
• Finally a woven mat is dried in the sun for a short time before being polished
Weaving process
• The loom consists of a warp supported by the mukali (a bamboo tripod)
• The weft of korai strands is inserted in the needle and made to pass over
and under the warp of starched cotton threads according to the design,
very similar to the process of weaving fabric
• Water is used to soften the grass during weaving the process
Motifs and patterns
• Dyed grass strands are woven into bold stripe patterns with a thick set of streaks
on both ends to make conventional looking mats
• Traditional colours-black,brown,red(derived from-sappan tree)

for wedding ceremonies

• Sirumalai is a region of 60,000 acres situated 25 km from Dindigul and
90 km from Madurai
• Sirumalai -dense forest region with a moderate climate throughout
the year
• Sirumalai hill banana-most important heritage banana of Tamil Nadu.
• Sirumalai banana-small to medium size,after ripened process bright
yellow colour with greenish at the end of steam
