SIMPLE PAST TENSE

We use the Simple Past Tense when we talk
about the activities or the actions which
happened in the past.
• Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian
musician and composer. He lived from 1726
to 1761. He started composing at the age of
five and wrote more than 600 pieces of
music. He was only 35 years old when he
died.
• Formula :
1. (+) Subject + verb-2 + object/adverb
(-) Subject + didn’t + verb-1 + object/adverb
(?) Did + subject + verb-1 + object/adverb
2. (+) Subject + was/were + object/adverb
(-) Subject + was/were + not + object/
adverb
(?) Was/were + subject + object/adverb

THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

Ahmad & Budi played tennis yesterday. They
began at ten o’clock and finished at 11.30.
So at 10.30 they were playing tennis.
They were playing = “they were in the middle
of playing”. They hadn’t finished playing.
Formula :
1. Subject + was/were + verb-ing +
object/adverb + when + subject + verb-2 +
object/adverb
2. Subject + was/were + verb-ing +

• We use the Past Continuous Tense to say that
somebody was in the middle of doing
something at a certain time in the past. The
action or situation had already started before
this time but had not finished.
i.e : 1. I was walking home when I met Andry
2. Ani was watching TV when the phone rang
