MANAGEMENT

INFORMATION
SYSTEMS
WHAT IS MANAGEMENT
INFORMATION SYSTEM OR MIS ?
 Management information system, or MIS,
broadly refers to a computer-based system
that provides managers with the tools to
organize, evaluate and efficiently manage
departments within an organization.
IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN AN
ORGANIZATION

 Communication
 Part of management is gathering and
distributing information, and information
systems can make this process more efficient
by allowing managers to communicate rapidly.
 Operations
 How you manage your company's operations
depends on the information you have.
Information systems can offer more complete
and more recent information, allowing you to
operate your company more efficiently.
 Decisions
 The company information system can help
you make better decisions by delivering all
the information you need and by modeling
the results of your decisions. When you have
accurate, up-to-date information, you can
make the choice with confidence.
 Records
 Your company needs records of its activities
for financial and regulatory purposes as well
as for finding the causes of problems and
taking corrective action. The information
system stores documents and revision
histories, communication records and
operational data.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF MIS
  transaction processing systems-
produce fixed, regularly scheduled reports
based on data extracted and summarized
from the firm’s underlying transaction
system .
 Decision support systems (DSS) are computer
program applications used by middle and
higher management to compile information
from a wide range of sources to support
problem solving and decision making.
 Executive information systems (EIS) is a reporting
tool that provides quick access to summarized
reports coming from all company levels and
departments such as accounting, human resources
and operations.
 Marketing Information Systems are Management
Information Systems designed specifically for
managing the marketing aspects of the business.
 Accounting information systems(AIS) are
focused accounting functions.
 Human resource management systems are used for
personnel aspects.

 Office automation systems (OAS) support

communication and productivity in the enterprise
by automating workflow and eliminating
bottlenecks.
 Enterprise resource planning(ERP) facilitates
the flow of information between all business
functions inside the boundaries of the
organization and manage the connections to
outside stakeholders.
WHY MIS FOR GARMENTS
INDUSTRY ?
 MIS formats are widely used in the garment factories as a
reporting system. In the garment industry, mostly in
garment production, various information is being collected
manually in a pre-designed format from each process for
various purposes.  Later this information is entered into
the computer to store and for retrieval and to provide
wide access to the management team.

The purpose of recording is to know actual facts and

figures of the shop floor and take decision based on
data. Data should be recorded in such a way that intended
analysis can be made later. And most of the users can read
and understand information captured in a format. Printed
formats, that are used to record primary information are
called as MIS formats.
 All departments use format to record data or make a
daily report. Like production report, quality audit report.
Whatever information is transferred from one department
to another is made in pre-designed form.

 Examples:

 1. Line supervisor and production manager need hourly

production report. How they will get it? Somebody has to
record production data hour by hour. In case somebody
has real time shop floor data tracking system, production
data can be seen directly on computer screen.

2. Suppose, you need to know percentage defective of a

line for the day. To know that you have to record data of
how many pieces has been made by the line during the
day and how many defective pieces are found  by
checking individual pieces throughout day. So you need a
quality inspection format to capture quality data.
SOME MIS SOFTWARE'S USING
IN GARMENTS INDUSTRY
