Evaluation of production

digipack and ancillary

(faheem – luqmaan)
Ancillary task
For our ancillary task, we chose to create a magazine advertisement that would
automatically catch the audiences attention, and we also wanted to make it clear
that the artist had his own brand image and identity, thus the various
positions in which he has constructed the magazine from.
We wanted to make our magazine advert look professional,
And we could only do this by thinking of new and unorthodox
Ideas and also by using our imagination. As you can see, the artist
has taken up a number of different positions here and by putting
these together they Created the brand image and logo for the artist.
The main purpose of this ancillary task was also to make the audience
Think deeper into his/her mind by using the contrasting black and
White colours, as it fits in with the whole narrative of the music video.
We think we have used the typical conventions of indie pop & RNB for
This magazine advert because the artist has a big ego, shown by the
Number of poses he is in, and also by the name of the artist, Jemex.
Also what ,makes the artist recognisable to others is the sunglasses as
Various numbers of people gave feedback saying that this was a part of
His identity.
The feedback given from this magazine ad was quite positive, although
Some people thought that the use of contrasting colours could have been
Chosen more wisely as brighter colours would have made the product stand
Out more.
Comparison of magazine adverts
Typical indie pop RNB magazine advert Our ancillary task
As you can see from the comparison of magazine adverts in
this particular genre, there are the same typical
conventions of the music genre in the adverts, such as the
main focus point being the artist, but also more
importantly, including a visual metaphor to intrigue the
audience and make them want to see more. From the
typical magazine ads of the genre, both the artists and the
visual metaphors are clearly present, e.g. The hush sound
in collision with a train. I think we have clearly covered this
part of the production of our magazine advert through the
visual number 1, created with the use of different poses
and positions the artist has taken. We think that we have
clearly mastered the typical narrative conventions of this
music genre and have excellently fitted it in with our
ancillary task and also our digi pack and music video.
Digipack
• For our digipack, we decided to only do 4 panels as there were only 2 of us in the group.
We researched and planned how we were going to create our digipack and looked at various
other digipacks for inspiration. Through our research and planning, we found that the typical
conventions of this genre of music and the digipacks that were made according to the music
were somehow unorthodox and didn't make any sense. However, this was the typical
conventions that we found made the genre what it is, providing it with humour, suspense,
drama and narratives.
After a few rough drafts and alterations, we finished our digipack and provided questionnaires to
the class about what they thought about it. Most of the feedback was good and positive, but
a few people pointed out that the digipack follows the narrative of the music video, but
according to contrast of colours and background pictures, they felt it never fitted in with the
rest of the project. Below are some examples of typical digipacks, and also our own we
created.
Final digipack
This is our final digipack which we both thought
looked very good, because firstly it followed
typical conventions of the genre, which were that
it focuses on the main artist, and also having
good stand in background pictures as well as
making the digipack look appealing by using
different styles of fonts and colours.
The key elements that made it stand out and fit in
really well with the genre was how the actual
album name worked well with the narrative of
the story and the ancillary task.
The attention to detail was very precise and
accurate, with a good use of effects such as the
ghostly outline and the opacity of the artist to
make him look almost angelic, and also the
background pictures used in the digipack fit in
with the album name as it seems to look like a
town on fire and in mayhem, which is when the
album name strikes effect, “reform”, as things are
needed to be changed and can only be started by
changing individually, which is basically the
narrative of the music video.
The feedback we received on our digipack was
useful as it showed some peoples perspectives on
firstly how well the digipack was created, but
secondly how well all of our project fitted in well
together.
Conclusion
• After we completed our project, we gave out questionaires to the class and received feedback which we used to
full advantage on how to improve our project if it were to be done again.
• After careful planning, research and analysis, we have come to the conclusion that our media product DOES use
forms and conventions of real media texts, being things such as intense focus on the main artist and good use of
lighting, effects and background pictures. Our media product also develops typical forms and conventions of
media texts as well because not only did we research and plan around the typical conventions of media texts, but
also researched those that break this stereotype, and by researching and developing ideas based on accounts
from both challenging and agreeing with typical media texts and their conventions, we felt we had an advantage
over the other groups in the class as we made our project to specifically make people think deeper and make
them understand more, as we included both stereotypical conventions, forms and attributes of media texts as
well as challenging them as well, so it was really confusing for some of the audience but this is the niche target
market we were aiming at and i think we can successfully say that this product would appeal to our target market
because our target audience would be witty, intelligent individuals who would be able to see past the most logical
explanations for anything, and so would understand our media project.
• Throughout our media project, we ourselves were getting confused as to whether the track really was suitable for
the music video we had planned and vice versa, but as time went on we found that we could make a media
project that was totally different to everybody elses, and we could achieve this by both challenging stereotypical
conventions but also developing and enhancing these stereotypes as well, and it seemed an unusual and puzzling
combination at first, but as the music video the ancillary task and the digipack started developing, we could see
there was potential here for our project to be very successful.
