Book
First of all, you have to know what is statistics.
Statistics is the science of data. It includes collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing
and interpreting data to assist in making more effective decisions.

Nowadays is the age of technology.

So, data plays as a very important role. Whatever we do, we need data to know what is
happening around the world.
And to make improvement, we need data and information to compete with others in
the competitive world.
You may be the ones who work in different fields. You may be scientists, doctors,
engineers, business men, teachers, and so on.
Whatever you are, you must need data and information to study widely what you take
as specialization.
These are what data is and how data is important.
That’s why you need to study statistics.
Explain

Why Study Statistics? ????

• Statistical knowledge is required in many university programs.

• As you investigate a future career in accounting, economics, human resources, finance, business analytics, or
other business area, you also will discover that statistics is required as part of these college programs.
• The key of the requirement for statistics knowledge is the technologies available for capturing data.

• Example
The technology that Google uses to track how Internet users access websites. As people use to search
internet , Google records every search and then uses these data to sort and prioritize the results for future
Internet searches. One recent estimate indicates that Google processes 20,000 terabytes ( 10 12 ) of
information per day. Big-box retailers like Target, Walmart, Kroger, and others scan ever purchase and use
the data to manage the distribution of products, to make decisions about marketing and sales, and to track
daily and even hourly sales. Police departments collect and use data to provide city residents with maps that
communicate information about crimes committed and their location . Every organization is collecting and
using data to develop knowledge and intelligence that will help people make informed decisions and to track
the implementation of their decisions.
The main facts are that

Statistical knowledge is useful for summarizing and organizing data to provide information
that is useful and supportive to make decisions. It is used to valid comparisons and to
predict the outcomes of decisions.

The main reasons for studying statistics-

1. Making Information Useful

Example: If a researcher collect data for his research project, but he doesn’t have the statistical knowledge.
While doing research, there may be many possibilities. But he must decide what possibility is
more likely to be true. When this happens, all the data he collected will be uninterpretable.
Because he can’t evaluate the best results and decisions based on the data. The final result is he may lose
money, time and data.

statistical knowledge
2. Making professional and personal decisions

Example: If you were the owner or manager of a company, you have to try to earn more profit and demand
than the previous year. For instance, Samsung and I-phone are competitors. They compete for
the world best selling position. The managers of the company must collect the data from the market
and make a survey from consumers that 1. what kind of phone they want 2. what quality and
functions they want 3. which shapes and forms they want. Based on these data, they have to make
professional and educated decisions with statistical knowledge. This is the example for professional
decisions.

Example: To make personal decisions, statistical knowledge is required. It is important part of daily life. For
instance, when you graduated from a high school, you must choose which university you want to join.
Most of the people must find the data of the schools to make decision. And you may think what benefits
and what kind of jobs you will get after getting a degree. Then you must choose the career for your life.
All the decisions are based on data, information and knowledge you have. To choose the best ways for
your life, you may need basic skills of statistics.
3. For understanding the world and to be a conversant in career
Example: To view the world from different perspectives and to understand the world issues, you need the
fundamental skills of it.
To know more deeply in your specialization, you need information and data.

4. Becoming a better informed consumer

Example: If you consume something, you need information of it. Some individuals actively lie and mislead
with statistics. Some wrongly report them carelessly without doing accurate investigation. That’s
why if you have basic knowledge of statistics, you will be in better position in evaluating decisions
from information you have been given.

colleges which need to reference
data from internet
5. To read a technical journal

Example: If you read technical journals, you will find some forms of statistics. You will find result sections
in them. If you have no statistical knowledge, the result sections will be meaningless. The ability
to extract the meaning of the message from these sections will enhance your knowledge and
understanding related to your coursework.

6. To develop the critical thinking and analytical skills

Example: Students who finished high school level and introduce to college must face with critical thinking
and projects based on data. They must analyze the information for their project and coursework.
So, they need high level of critical thinking and analytical skills. Finally, they need to have
fundamental skills of statistics.
