Capitalization & Sentences

Capitalize the first word of ALL sentences; this
includes the first word of a direct quote.
Examples:
 Many workers in the field of aviation and
aerospace aspire to be pilots.
 She yelled, “Watch out for that car!”
 Some organizations want to extend the use
of the Internet into the solar system.
Capitalization & “I”

Capitalize the singular pronoun “I”
Examples:
 Today I am going to the park.
 I flew an airplane for the first time last
week.
 I yell “Watch out for that car!” regularly
when my sister drives.
Capitalization & Proper Nouns

Nouns are people, places or things and proper
nouns are specific people, places or things and are
ALWAYS CAPITALIZED.
Examples:
Common Nouns: Proper Nouns
actor Tom Cruise
cookie Chips Ahoy
school Aviation High School
Capitalization & Proper Nouns

Capitalize names of people, organizations,
places, trademarks, and specific things.
Examples:
 Reba Gilman is the principal of Aviation High
School.
 The successful landing of a plane on the
Hudson River is a miraculous event.
 The United Continental Holdings Inc. is being
sued by its pilots over new training
regulations.
Capitalization & Proper Nouns

Capitalize countries, nationalities, cities, states,
newspapers, journals, and languages.
Examples:
 As part of China's new major space
mission, the Tiangong-1, a new space
lab, will be launched soon.
 Seattle, Washington, was deemed as
“just plane crazy” by the Sun Break.
 English is the universal language.
Capitalization & Proper Nouns

Capitalize days of the week, months, holidays,
and academic courses; don‘t capitalize seasons
or subjects.
Examples:
 The busiest months of the airline
industry are July and August.
 My sister and I are taking Geography
101 and a few classes in earth sciences
this summer.
Capitalization & Proper Nouns

Capitalize specific geographic locations, periods,
historical events, and specific celestial bodies.
(not century numbers)
Examples:
 We're leaving the Southeast and heading
north.
 It is further from Venus to Earth than the
Moon to Earth.
 Most students hate learning about the
Renaissance in history class.
Capitalization & Religious Figures

Capitalize religious figures, books, items, and God; do
not capitalize god when referring to mythology
Examples:
I always find myself praying to God when hitting
turbulence on an airplane.
The Bible is a collection of primary texts of Judiasm
and Christianity.
The god Zeus is the main diety in Greek mythology.
Capitalization & Abbv.

Capitalize abbreviations of specific things
Examples:
 NASA is reportedly having trouble
locating UARS, a satellite that re-
entered Earth's atmosphere overnight
Friday.
 The EPA warns dairy owners on
upgrading their manure handling
systems.
Capitalization & Members

Capitalize members of political, social, national,
athletic, and racial groups
Examples:
 African Americans
 Republicans
 Mariners
Capitalization & Titles

Capitalize titles that come before a name but
not a title that follows.
Examples:
 President Obama said he wanted to be
president one day.
 All senators are expected to attend.
 Senator Barrett, the president of the
company, will be leaving.
Capitalization & Titles

Capitalize the first, last, and important words of
a title of a book, article, etc.

non-important words: a, an, the, but, and
prepositions that are fewer than five letters.
Examples:
 Book of Flight: The Smithsonian
National Air and Space Museum
 Ten Harrowing Days That Changed
Aviation History
