WHAT IS DYNAMIC
COMMUNICATION?
Dynamic Communication
Considering that everything from simple non-verbal
gestures to elaborate verbal descriptions all fall under the
wide category of "communication”, dynamic
communication is a skill that needs to be demonstrated by
the teacher and practiced to be used in both classroom and
real-life settings – or as stated by Dr. Tim Clark, “skills
that are essential for personal and professional success”.

TECHNIQUES FOR
DYNAMIC
COMMUNICATION
Delivering Communication
Verbal Non-Verbal Media

5
Verbal Techniques
“Helps the audience understand what is being said“ (Center
for Teaching and Learning)
• Vary the speed and color of voice to keep students
engaged
• Project the voice to be clearly heard
• Pause for attention, emphasize transitions, and provide
students with time to digest the information

6
Non-Verbal Techniques
“Helps the audience be receptive to what you are saying“ (Center
for Teaching and Learning)
• Maintain eye contact and stand confidently
• Use facial expressions to convey importance of content
• Use controlled movements and gestures to show enthusiasm and
energy
• Show enthusiasm and energy to capture the attention of students

7
Media
“Helps to explain complex ideas “ (Center for Teaching and
Learning)
• Chalk board or whiteboard to show visual representations as
well as progression of ideas
• Presentations can be created with visual representations, and
audio recordings to maximize student engagement.
• Physical artifacts can add a layer of reality to the content
being presented
• All resources should be used to aid understanding, not
students from understanding.

Compared to traditional text
communications, a study an asynchronous
feedback was able to prove that “…
asynchronous audio commenting merits
serious consideration in the development
and delivery of future courses” (Ice et al,
2007). This points to how important
dynamic communication can be when
demonstrating communication skills to
students as well as keeping students
engaged during the content delivery.

STRATEGIES FOR
DYNAMIC COMMUNICATION
IN THE CLASSROOM
• Begin with the Purpose
• Have understanding of each student –
their backgrounds and interests – so that
the appropriate communication can
happen to meet specific needs.
• Develop Norms for Communication
• Set clear standards and procedures for
communicating both online and in-
person, as well as what to do when
communication mistakes occur
• Use Effective Presentation Skills
• Demonstrate skills such as presenting
clearly and concisely, emphasizing key
words, and providing audience with the
time to digest the information for the
students
