HISTORY OF RAJDOOT

Rajdoot 175 WFM

 The first motorcycle sold by company was Rajdoot WFM in 1961,

built in Poland then exported to Indian to sell under brand
named Rajdoot which was owned by escorts group.
 They started with the best Poland had to offer in the form of
the SHL M11 175cc motorcycle that had the WFM Two Stroke
thumper.
 Later in 1962 license were sold to Escorts Group in India, where
they were produced until 2005 as Rajdoot Excel-T.
 The bike was available only in black up until Rajdoot came out
with the four speed iteration of the 175, called Super D-175.
 Rajdoot sold about 1.6 million black "soviet" styled motorbikes,
in the Excel T and Deluxe models, until it was phased out in
2005
 Doctor use to recommend the bike to those have back pain
because of its great and comfortable suspension.
Rajdoot GTS ( Bobby)

 It has 173 cc Two Stroke air cooled engine that served in

the Rajdoot 175.The power was transmitted to the rear
wheel through a 3-speed transmission.
 The Rajdoot GTS gained cult status after it featured in
the movie Bobby in 1973 and starred alongside Rishi
Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. Raj Kapoor’s movie made
the little bike a star and earned it the nickname
‘Bobby’.
 GTS too went out of fashion and its demise was sealed
when the last one rolled out from Rajdoot ’s factory in
1984.
Rajdoot 350
 The worldwide Yamaha RD350B was assembled in India between
1983-1990 by Escorts group under the brand name Rajdoot 350.
 Indian government give it to agricultural department officers
due to its reliability.
 Capable of speeds up to 160 kmph and with an acceleration of
0-60 kmph in 4 secs, this bike is easily the fastest bike ever to
be launched in India.
 There were two models for the Rajdoot 350 - High Torque and
Low Torque. Compared to the Yamaha RD350B that made 39
crankshaft bhp, the Indian-made HIGH TORQUE made 30.5 bhp
(22.7 kW) and the later LOW TORQUE made only 27 bhp (20 kW),
all in quest of better fuel economy. By the time the production
ended in 1990, the bike was completely indigenized with very
little Japanese part content.
 After the runaway success of its smaller stablemate Yamaha RX
100 introduced in 1985, the Rajdoot 350 stayed in production as
a flagship model, and production ended in 1990.
 The last bikes were reported to be sold in 1991.

Present scenario of Company

 The motorcycle manufacturing unit in Faridabad, India, was sold to Yamaha in

the late 1990s when Escorts decided to quit the motorcycle business to
concentrate on tractors and auto components.
 Now Escorts Group is concentrate on its Agri-machinery, Construction
Equipment and Railway Equipment.
 Has no plan to return in motorcycle segment.
What went Wrong?

 Around that time came about the advent of the sub-100 cc 2

stroke and 4 stroke motorcycles. These bikes were not only
economic in terms of fuel consumption, but were peppy enough
to satisfy the needs of the average speed-freak. As a result the
RD 350 sales nearly came to a stand-still and soon the
production of the bike had to be discontinued
 Not good after sale service for costumers.
 No Innovation to keep up with market.
 Production was ceased back in 2005 due to non-compliance
with emission norms. which was major cause for its down fall.
How to revive the Brand?

 It can follow footstep of Mahindra to revive Jawa which

was also rival at time to Rajdoot.
 Providing better Service and better availability of spare
parts.
 Relaunching Rajdoot with better fuel efficiency and
emission control could also work.
