    St. Martin's Island is the only coral island in Bangladesh located at the southern tip of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. While the exact year of its discovery is unknown, Arabian sailors first settled it around 250 years ago. During the 1824-1826 Anglo-Burmese war, Britain and Burma fought over ownership of the island. It was later named St. Martin's Island, with two conflicting histories about how it received this name. The island now has a population of around 7,000 people, a significant increase from the original 13 families with 50 members who lived there in the late 19th century.

    INTRODUCTION

    Saint Martin is the only tropical coral island of Bangladesh. It is rich


    in biodiversity which is naturally made of organic material derived
    from associate organism of coral ecosystem. The St. Martin’s island is
    the only coral bearing the offshore island of Bangladesh. It is situated
    at the tip of the Cox’s Bazar - Teknaf peninsula and forming the
    southernmost part of Bangladesh.

     Exactly in which year this island was discovered is still unidentified.

     Around 250 years ago, the first settlement of this island started by the Arabian sailors.

     By some Rakhains from Arakan.

    THE ANGLO-BURMESE WAR

    Throughout the year 1824-1826 the first Anglo-Burmese war between the British and
    the Burmese Empire, there was a major fight concerning the ownership of this island.

    HOW IT BECAME THE ST. MARTIN’S ISLAND

     During British occupation, the island was named
     There was a saint named Mr. Luther Martin.
    after the then Deputy Commissioner of During British rule, an army officer named
    Chittagong Mr. Martin as St. Martin Island. Captain Hiram Cox was given the duty of the
    Cox’s Bazar area. Saint Martin was a beloved
    person of Captain Hiram Cox. For some
    period, Saint Martin stayed at the Jinjira
    island. To keep him as a memory of Mr. Cox’s
    beloved person, he named this island as the
    ‘Saint Martin’.

     In late 18th Century, few Rakhain communities started to live on this island.
     Toral Sikhder bought this place and sold it to Mohammad Ibrahim.
     At the end of 19th century, Mohammad Ibrahim started to live in the island with some
    families.
