RECTILINEAR MOTION
IT IS A MOTION MOVING ALONG STRAIGHT LINE
QUANTITY OF MOTION
SPEED – A scalar quantity which is the ratio of distance, d
over elapsed time t.
QUANTITY OF MOTION
VELOCITY – A vector quantity which is the ratio of
displacement, s over elapsed time, t a speed with direction.
QUANTITY OF MOTION
ACCELERATION – A vector quantity which is the measure of
the change velocity per unit time.

NOTE:
EXAMPLE 1:
On a certain stretch of track, trains run at 60 mph (96.56 kph). How
far back of a stopped train should be a warning torpedo be placed to
signal an oncoming train? Assume that the brakes are applied at
once and retard the train at the uniform rate of 2 ft/sec2 (0.61 m/s2).
EXAMPLE 2:
A motorcyclist heading east through small city accelerates after he
passes the signpost marking the city limits. His acceleration is
constant 4m/s^2. At time t = 0, he is 5.0 m east of the signpost,
moving east at 15m/s.
A. Find the position and velocity at time t = 2.0s
B. Where is the motorcyclist when his velocity is 25 m/s?
EXAMPLE 3:
A car travelling with constant speed of 15m/s passes a school crossing corner
where the speed limit is 10m/s. Just as the car passes, a police officer on a
motorcycle stopped at the corner off in pursuit with constant acceleration of
3.0m/s^2.
A. How much time elapses before the officer catches up with the car?
B. What is the officer’s speed at that point?
C. What is the total distance each vehicle has traveled at that point?
EXAMPLE 4:
A stone is thrown vertically upward and return to earth in 10 sec.
What was its initial velocity and how high did it go?
