South Asian Culture


CULTURE

A culture is the set of norms, traditions and


practices set by any specific society. It is
the values defined by the forefathers of any
specific society. Culture is based on the
language, ethnicity, religion, beliefs,
literature from state to state and region to
region.
South Asian Culture
The culture which is blend with
different major religions of the
world; Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism.
South Asian Culture having strong
values and norms and social
bindings as compare to the culture of
West.
Festival and Traditions
• The festival and occasions celebrated in these nations are mostly the
religion based festivals like the Muslims celebrates Eids. Hindus
celebrates Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bandhan. Buddhist celebrates
• The South Asian celebrates their festivals with full zeal and enthusiasm
without considering their financial status, every community tends to enjoy
and celebrate the festivals to their fullest.

The culture their has a strong concept of


family life and considered as the compulsory
element of and individual’s life span. Mostly
the South Asian culture gives the value and
importance to joint family systems rather than
having a nuclear family. And as if nowadays if
nuclear family systems starts trending still the
social gathering and meetings on occasions
and festivals is the beauty of their culture
Language
• Language is also the very sensitive and emotional heritage of any culture.
The literature and the art of any culture gives the true essence in its own
language. The major languages of South Asia are Hindi Urdu Bengali
Sinhala Tamil as in national languages but the culture has expanded too
much that they possess many other languages as the natives.

spices and gravies with rice, meat and wheat as a mandatory element in
day to day food.
• South Asians are mainly fond of seafood and makes it essential in their
meal for the in take of proteins.

Dresses and Attires
• The dress and attires in the South Asian region are defined as the one
covering their whole bodies, taking care of their religious demands,\
• The high dose of colors can be seen in the culture of South Asia and the
blend of fancy and bright attires on occasion.
Pakistani Dress

The national dress of Pakistan for men are


Kurta Shalwar and for the women, its
Kameez Shalwar.
The formal attires used in the occasions are
bit fancy and heavy as compare to normal
days outfit.
The fabric of the clothes are mainly of
Cotton, as considering the weather of the
country.
Indian Dress

The national dress of India is Saree for


women and Dhoti for men. But it vary
from state to state with its design and the
way of wearing it. India presents the large
variety of traditional as well as occasional
wear due to the vast area of states having
different taste in culture. The Dhoti is
rarely worn in the urban cities but still can
be seen in villages
Bangladeshi Wears

The attire of Bangladeshi dress is resemble


to the Indian Attire as India, Pakistan and
Bangladesh was formerly a united state,
named as Sub-continent
Nepal

The national dress of Nepal for males is


Daura-Saruwal, it’s a closed neck shirt
with 5 pleats. While the women wears the
Cotton Saree and the blouse is worn in a
way that it looks alike long skirt.
Sri Lankan Dress

The popular attire of Sri Lanka is Saree. It


is their daily use attire for the formal office
wear as well. Men wear long sleeved shirts
as in their formal dressing.
Bhutan Wears

The Kira and Gho is the traditional dress of


Bhutan for female and male. The Kira is
the female attire , it’s a rectangular piece of
woven cloth which goes to the length of
ankle and wrapped around the body and
pinned on both of the shoulders.
Maldives

Dhigu Hedhun is the name of national


dress of Maldives shows the special
representation of island.
